I find it informative on cycling in general as I am just getting into a habit of commuting on a regular basis. There seems a lot of genuine people who are willing to share their knowledge of cycling with other newbies like myself. Really enjoy the Ride Through the Night to the Coast – almost worth a trip to London just to enjoy the experience.

I was a P&L regular since Day 1 and I've always tried to keep it intelligent, robust and rational. I always found it funny how many people seemed to care so much about a part of the forum they claim not to visit and not to like... Anyway, ironically, I do agree that it's no fun anymore and I'm not posting there for the foreseeable. I enjoy the pics of people's rebuilds and so on in the Gallery and the Fixie / SS section. I've always liked the discussion in Racing, but that's quite dead these days. Commuting seems to consist of a certain poster from near Birmingham's incomprehensible dribblings on one hand, and then everyone else on the other... so occasional visits to the cafe seem to be it for now for me. Anyway, I'd like P&L to be fun again... because it's probably my natural habitat here.

It's been various reasons at various times for me, but lately it's a way of meeting up with people for rides and such.

Taking the biscuit
I came to CC after a five year break from cycling owed to a couple of nasty incidents I suffered while riding.

Since I joined I have made several lasting friendships, been given sound advice, encouragement, spare parts, consolation, belly laughs, excellent company on rides and even a complete bike.

When I decided to go for a career change and become a cycling instructor, it was on CC that I got the best advice and support.

I have the occasional sabbatical but the call of my CC friends means I'm never far from the forum.

I have no real friends.

Funny, coz I was going to say, all my best mates are here...

Being 'virtual' doesn't make people 'not real'.

I come here to catch up with my mates. Yes, I have people I can go to the pub with, but I think I'm probably more likely to confide in, or ask advice of, people on here, and every evening someone makes me laugh.

Plus of course, I also meet up with forummers for rides sometimes.

1) It is a fantastic source of information and advice for an inexperienced cyclist.

2) The humour. The British have a wonderful way with brevity, kindness dressed as cruelty, and a beautiful "put-down". Loads of practitioners here. I laugh out loud quite a lot.

3) It encourages me to ride, more and more.

Thanks all.

Well I've learnt quite a bit from here (and still have plenty more to learn) and not just about bikes. My family often look a bit surprised at some of the snippets I have learnt from here, from solar heating, recumbent bikes to growing veg tips.

There are loads of nice people on here and it's lovely getting to know their internet persona, and I must get around to meeting a few more in person. Some people have shared some very emotional parts of their lives with the rest of us, which has made my cry at times.

I visit most parts of the forum, though don't always post in them such as racing.

There is a lovely feeling of community, and as others have said I often laugh (even now thinking about some of the threads that have had me rolling on the floor such as farmers with cows in lanes, or the fact that ping pong balls are a fire hazard in the right hands).

As a 'newbie' I think Cycle Chat is great and I too have picked up some valuable tips about cycling.

However, I need to get out of the habit of just clicking on 'New Content' which quickly brings me up to speed with all the latest forum replies.

Unfortunately, doing it this way brings up lots of 'intellectual nonsense' which is so mind numbingly boring it does my head in.

But, I still have to read it !!!!!

Doh !!!!!!

I find it inspiring reading how cc 'ers have improved in their training, distance and speed. Trouble is I seem to read more than do more about it.

I enjoy P&L as you can have a bit of craic with people of the opposite view to yourself and I do hope FM you are not away too long.

The tips and advice on buying gear and bargains etc is very useful........

Mostly the CC'ers themselves, that make this site interesting and enjoyable.

I have picked up several very useful tips on here and posted a few of my own about all sorts of subjects not all of them related to cycling. Mostly spend my time in cafe, commuting and touring and expedition with ocaisional dips into bikes and accesories and know how. I consider that I have some good virtual friends on here and hope someday to meet some of them.
