Been on and moderated many forums over the years. Moderate a football forum currently and is always interesting what comes up, many legal threats and court papers to discuss. The problem seems to be the anonymity and people feel they can type what they want and there are no repercussions as it is a virtual setting. Unfortunately this is not true and people are too quick to run off and tell on someone calling them names.

The ignore function on a forum is invaluable and in my experience has made places much more appealing, CycleChat being one of them. Since I have filtered some of the people I just could not read without getting annoyed it has made the place better for me. Too often people do not use the ignore function and just continue years old arguments with the same people ad naseum.

I'm new on here but joined because I've enjoyed lurking and seeing that it IS a friendly place, that there are a few people who like to tease or be grumpy but that it rarely descends into anything too rough. I'm impressed by the mix of people too, you don't have to be a total tech-head to be here, or do 100km per day. I don't ride huge distances but I feel really strongly about cycling, so I can find lots to interest me.

I belong to Snowheads but haven't bothered to post there for ages - it is a bit cliquey, although I've had some nice chats on there in the past. Also on permies.com which is a great permaculture site but very slanted to America so I can't participate as much as I'd like, I just get great info on rocket mass heaters and hugelkultur.

It always surprises me when I stumble onto other forums and see the level of snarling and just plain unpleasantness that's out there. Before I discovered CC, I used to post sometimes on a usenet cycling group, but I ended up doing a flounce, my final message being to lay into the entrenched 'in crowd' who, not for the first time, had laid viciously into a newbie who had, with the best of intentions, transgressed against some internal taboo. I told them all what a bunch of smug self-righteous shoots they were, and was fortunate to run across The Friendly Place, where I have ambled aimlessly ever since.

I did get that once when i first joined here as i dared to laugh at the price of a Rapha jacket. At least i was able to find out quickly who was who and i'm glad they didn't put me off as through CC i have found some new friends that i have met up to ride with and am due to meet up with some more in a couple of weeks for some cycling in a part of the country i don't know that well so a double bonus too.

Luckily that needn't apply too much here! My sister sent me a link to a US forum where someone had posted a pic of a pink crochet cosy they'd made for their handgun, and the comments below were just.... alien... brrrrrr.....

Hmm, crochet cosies... now where was that thread about the chap getting cold bits when he cycles...?

I get the impression some people on here forget there is a good chance you could meet up in real life someday as we share the same interest. Ive never been in a forum before and have found this in the main to be friendly and helpful. Have also met a few in real life and have been surprised how friendly and welcoming strangers from all different walks of life can be. I never set out to offend anyone do have a short temper and thick as pig shoot. I love to have a laugh p take and try and lighten any situation. Much love

There are cliques on CycleChat.

I don't like the way a poster who goes against the perceived orthodoxy is ganged up on by others.

It's happened today in the living alone thread in the cafe, and it happens all the time in Current Affairs and Debates.

OK, being savaged by the Guardian reading lily livered rad-fem lefties in CA and D is like, as someone once said, being savaged by a dead sheep.

It's their hypocrisy that gets me.
