There are cliques on CycleChat.

I don't like the way a poster who goes against the perceived orthodoxy is ganged up on by others.

It's happened today in the living alone thread in the cafe, and it happens all the time in Current Affairs and Debates.

OK, being savaged by the Guardian reading lily livered rad-fem lefties in CA and D is like, as someone once said, being savaged by a dead sheep.

It's their hypocrisy that gets me.

I agree - every forum has little cliques but I guess that's human nature. I think some people stay away from forums due to cliques.

Same with the forum Big Dogs - 'senior members' that post incessantly to demonstrate how clever they are and those who argue for the sake of arguing. That puts people off too.

I like this forum and whilst I have occasionally posted in CAD I think it'd be a better place without it. Maybe a separate forum like Business & Pets or whatever is needed for the deep thinkers and crusaders.

I get the impression some people on here forget there is a good chance you could meet up in real life someday as we share the same interest. Ive never been in a forum before and have found this in the main to be friendly and helpful. Have also met a few in real life and have been surprised how friendly and welcoming strangers from all different walks of life can be. I never set out to offend anyone do have a short temper and thick as pig s***. I love to have a laugh p take and try and lighten any situation. Much love

excellent post and a very polite way of covering the always right brigade. I like the idea of hiving that side of things off to a different board too.

the reason cycle forums work is coz we all like bikes, but football forums... Well... They like football but they only like people on the same team. We don't mind if you have a different brand of bike, even if its from Halfrauds.
i haven't used the ignore button on anyone. I wouldn't ignore someone for a difference of opinion in a thread, I'd only ignore them if they couldn't leave it there. I'm glad to say that hasn't happened bcoz cyclists are a mature bunch.

If you want to see what other horrors are out there, you need look no further than the comments under any YouTube clip. Hatred and bile within three or four posts. A couple of posts later, the virtue of your grandmother will be called into question. Odd people post, even on mainstream forums.

I know that it's an appalling confession, but I sometimes post on cnczone.com, a massive US forum for very experienced engineers ( amongst whom I am not numbered) , mainly retired aerospace types with a wealth of knowledge that they are more than willing to share with less experienced people. They are unswervingly polite and will give you the benefit of their huge experience, and only skirt around political questions. I made a bit of a mistake at the start of the latest Afghan War by suggesting it was all going to end in tears. They took issue, but were utterly civil, and I didn't press the matter. Great people.

As for Cyclechat, I think that Shaun and the Mods do a fantastic job with a very light touch. I don't know what stuff goes on behind the scenes but it seems pretty friendly to me, and with some beautiful knock-about British humour too.

Thank you Management.

I've said it before but CC is lovely compared to most other forums. Yes, even CA&D (which isn't even as argumentative as Commuting...) although it's going through a fallow period at the moment in terms of quality - it happens everywhere. I don't really see what people get out of complaining about particular sections of the forum and I know Shaun usually closes down down threads that turn into petty and pointless complaints about CA&D or Commuting or anywhere else, and he's quite right to do so.

You just have to visit any football teams own forum to see that even their own fan's can't even seem to agree with each other.

My OH is very scathing of my use of internet forums. In the past I've wasted much time perusing useless forums, but at least on cycle chat I feel that I'm learning something. Despite being a cyclist nearly all my adult life I only learnt about defensive riding etc when I started using this forum a couple of years ago, its really opened my eyes up to the research around cycle helmets, and cycling advocacy too.
Woe betide any innocent bystander who sneeringly asks me "where's your helmet?" They need to make sure they have a bit of time free to hear my answer, I made a colleague from another department late for work after he made the mistake of asking me this in the bike shed one day.

It's the only forum I use now.

It may be one of those threads you have to post a bit more to get on. If it is use the time to prepare yourself and take a deep breath, you may find yourself wanting to snap a pencil or two once you get there.

Go to the home page and right at the bottom is Community. It's in there.

Ah, yes, thanks Hill Wimp, I am obviously Not Yet To Be Trusted...

TBH I will probably steer clear even when (if?) I'm allowed in. Would rather talk about cycling!
