Maybe we're going about this wrong.

Let's ban cities - full of pollution, rude nobbers who never talk and cyclists who don't wave.

Taking this idea way too seriously, just for a second, how does that pan out? A square about 60-70m per person?

Don't fancy a square -

The problem with cities is all those backward nobbers commuting in from the country, making us breathe in their filth.

If you currently own a diesel powered car(Peugeot 208 1.4 HDI 98g/km) and are considering buying a brand new petrol powered car(Peugeot 1.2 Pure Tech 104g/km) which is more polluting over 3 years/30000miles, the production of the new car + 30000 miles or running running diesel car?

Indeed, and round these parts it is NOx rather than particulates that is the reason for us breaching air pollution limits. Still, the latest diesels are only three times worse than their official figures so Gavroche will be pleased.
I think heavy smokers put much more nasty stuff into their lungs than whatever NOx is. In any case, lungs have the ability to clean themselves as he human body is quite resilient. I live in a fairly clean area, by the sea side, with winds pushing away all the nasty stuff. I have never smoked in my life and drink very little alcohol. I understand it may be different in large cities but even these are cleaner than they were 50 years ago, with the smog and all that. So let's not dramatise too much on the issue.

I aim to please.
Feck me I'd hate to see it when you are being awkward then.

Whether or not someone smokes is personal choice. I gave it up partly due to concern about what I was doing to myself. Smoking indoors in public places is now illegal so people who choose not to smoke don't need to inhale concentrated cigarette smoke in confined spaces.

You give me no choice but to breathe in your soot particles and NOx. The next logical step is to restrict the use of diesel (and ideally petrol, but especially diesel) engines in congested areas so people don't need to breathe in damaging pollutants.

The reason towns are cleaner than 50 years ago is because efforts were made to do something about it.

Fine but until we find a pollution free way of individual transport, we are stuck with what we have. Electric cars are coming on but not quite good enough yet. I still maintain than petrol and diesel cars today are much cleaner than in the past.

I've always been something of a car enthusiast and I don't like my personal freedom being invaded either but the current situation is unsustainable. Ever-increasing traffic levels mean more congestion, increased pollution and actually restricts our movements.

People try and drive everywhere because society has been tailored to make it as easy as possible to so. By restricting vehicle use people will look to other alternatives. Not that long ago, very few people had a car at all and they were junk compared to today's but people got around just fine.
