Does anyone have a view on any potential risk with this?

Hang on, im sat by a wi-fi router thing now:ohmy::eek::blush::eek::biggrin:

All those primary school kids surfing the dodgy bits of the net - a real risk. And then you have the teachers in the common room.

Absolutely no problem whatsoever. I would have no problems with my kids sitting right next to one.

I say this as a physicist who works with MRI scanners (i.e. much more significant amounts of RF!)

No, most sites are blocked. And most sites where you can access other sites through them, are blocked aswell.
Google was banned in my school for a very long time.
Porn sites will pretty much all be blocked, and if you go on one you will have your internet rights taken away from you.

Very low power, lower than a DEC(T) phone.

We have those. My wife can't use them as they give her a sharp pain in her ear! We had to buy a corded phone for her to use.

I don't know what they do, but they do something!

Point an RF detector at them. Big continuous signal. Only beaten by a microwave. Of course it's not just signal, it's frequency etc... but!

there has been some research (can't remember where i read it) showing that kids using computers risk damaging the development of part of their brain, the bit that helps figure out order of things or something.

why would a primary school need wifi? surely computers it had would be fairly permanently on the site and could just be on a network giving greater control and protection?

Schools tend to get heavily filtered feeds and usually have security features enabled which stops open access should anyone hope to lig a free connection.

In many instances lap tops are used because they can be moved from classroom to classroom making it much easier for primaries to cope with making computers accessible to all pupils with minimum fuss. Space is usually at a premium and few schools have the luxury of being able to have a dedicated computer room.

In terms of installation costs Wifi is also a lot cheaper than a cabled network. Primary schools have a pitiful budget and anything that ekes out the number of available computers in the classrooms is normally welcomed.
