very good point.Does the notion of what's 'acceptable' still have any purchase in a world where posties are employed on three month contracts?

Try being self employed, you can take holidays when you wish unless of course your customers want you to do a job.
Too right ...!even if you were full time you could not be guarranteed the week you want.
Why? Do part time workers not throw sickies, I don't honestly see what difference it makes whether they are P/T or F/T if they decide to throw a sickie. Unlesss of course the work is so tedious or poor conditions that it effects the health of the F/T staff more. But look back and you will discover the reason why, people like the person earlier who see's it alright to throw a sickie and advises others to do the same. One of the very many reasons I no longer employ full tme workers.
That will certainly help build confidence in the job market, it's a good job people like Richard Branson and places like Waitrose don't adopt that attitude, you would probably fall into the Michael O'Leary category. What I should have said is do not employ people any more full stop. I have employed people in 3 of the different types of businesses I have owned over the last 37 year, now I successfully get by using sub contractors who are less likely to skive and throw sickies.
