Unfortunately, there are several threads on the subject on the royalmailchat forum, and it seems to be a known practice within the company for managers to harass sick employees in this way.

But look back and you will discover the reason why, people like the person earlier who see's it alright to throw a sickie and advises others to do the same. One of the very many reasons I no longer employ full tme workers.

Explain to the wife that RM used to work holidays on a rotaion base, one year you were at the back of the list the next year you were at the front and you were allowed to swap but you had to have a contract to do that, mine lasted 33years.

As a newbie on the job expect to be allocated the last 2 weeks of November for your holidays

even if you were full time you could not be guarranteed the week you want. Its the way with many businesses like the bank my 'unreasonable wife?' works for.
Ideally she should accept the situation with nothing else to say. More probably you will have to placate her so she knows you are as disappointed as she is

Too right ...!

I was working on a critical project once and was obliged to postpone a Yorkshire Dales summer holiday so many times that it finally took place at the end of October. We woke in our caravan on the second morning to discover a foot long icicle hanging from the dripping tap in the kitchen, and blizzard conditions outside! It stopped snowing after about 6 or 7 hours, but even 3 days later, there were still patches of snow 12 inches deep when we walked up the Pennine Way to the Tan Hill Tavern ... :cold:

Why? Do part time workers not throw sickies, I don't honestly see what difference it makes whether they are P/T or F/T if they decide to throw a sickie. Unlesss of course the work is so tedious or poor conditions that it effects the health of the F/T staff more.

What I should have said is do not employ people any more full stop. I have employed people in 3 of the different types of businesses I have owned over the last 37 year, now I successfully get by using sub contractors who are less likely to skive and throw sickies.

That will certainly help build confidence in the job market, it's a good job people like Richard Branson and places like Waitrose don't adopt that attitude, you would probably fall into the Michael O'Leary category.
