I can't see how it is your fault if the job was only meant to last three months. I can understand Mrs. A's frstration, but since she can't take it out on your bosses you'll just have to do. Quite how you get around it I don't know; I presume if you cancel your holiday you'll (a) lose your money ... and (b) get kicked in the man-spheres by Mrs. A until you scream like a little girl?

So is the extension definite? have they asked you to stay on? If not you could work until the end of the contract and then look for something else - with the obvious opportunity of telling the new employer of your existing holiday booking.

Good luck - and whilst I can't see how this is your fault, I can see how it will probably end up being your fault!!

Glad to be of service,
Shaun ... :giggle:

I think they have to honour any pre booked holidays if they where made before the job offer. RM will of course try to persuade you.

As mentioned time off in school hols is at a premium in some offices depending on what leave structure they have adopted. For instance in our office we pick leave in groups of 4 so only 4 people are after a particular week and all 52 are picked as we each get 13 weeks a year:becool:

From all my temp jobs in the past prebooked holidays were honored. However, sometimes it meant that the contract was created up to the holiday date and so there may not be a job to return to.

If the holiday was well outside the contract time wouldn't mention until the contract was extended it but if it was close or there was definete scope for an extension I would have mentioned it at the first interview. Saves any future difficulties.

Having said that I haven't had a prebooked holiday for over a decade.

I am trying to get my head around this, you are short of funds which is why you mention sick pay, by the way taking time off sick with pay when you are not sick is fraud. You have a chance of a good secure job and your wife rates a weeks holiday more important than that, I would say she is extremely unreasonable and maybe even slightly spoiled, in that she likes to get her own way.

Cancel the holiday and take the job, holidays you can get again jobs may be slightly harder to come across.

Man up and tell her straight, then quietly suffer the consequences.

Tell her if she is so upset about it that she can always go by herself.^_^ Make sure you have an escape route planned.

It's not really the wife that's getting her own way, it's the employer. They offered a temporary contract. This is one of the extremely obvious consequences of this. That's basically their 'fault'. If anyone should 'man up' as you put it, it the particular manager at Royal Mail.

Am I right in thinking that you haven't actually been offered the extension to your contract yet officially? If not, then getting a bit pushy about it might mean that they don't offer it. Just a thought.

Tell her you have resigned with immediate effect as it was praying too heavily on your conscience...and that you now cannot afford the holiday.

Lose, lose.

spot on, although the manager did say at interview that it was pretty de rigeur for contracts to be extended, as the reason the unions demanded new staff to be limited to 3 month contracts is now not relevant to the office i work at.
