Lizard skins 3.2mm bar tape is great (not cheap but hard wearing

Just bought this too , fitting at weekend let you know how i get on

...or just by 2 lots of thinner tape and double wrap or buy some gel inserts that go under the tape. Lizard Skins is way too expensive for bar tape.

[QUOTE 3751916, member: 9609"]You may laugh, but zoom in on my avatar and that is exactly what I have fitted - I have some problems with my thumb and I just love the extra diameter and shock absorption qualities of it. ^_^

The LOL was in agreement.

If you recall, a lot of the BMX's in the 80's used pipe insulation on the bar and toptube to cushion against knocks and bumps.

Lizard skin tape feels and looks lush, even if there are cheaper tapes. It's certainly cheaper than having to pay for lots of physio for chronic ulnar nerve issues, and worth a try...if appropriate....

But I seem to recall the OP is about a hybrid not road bike  and thus bar tape discussion isn't immediately relevant...although further positions afforded by curly bars can be beneficial in cases of numb hands

Ouch! That sounds bad! I wouldn't say that I wake up in tears, but sleeping and then waking is the worst part for the shoulder pain.

The shoulder pain seems to have lessened over the last few weeks, but the numbness and tingling/pins and needles down my forearm and my hand is getting to be a bit of a pain in the 'arris lately. It has to be a trapped nerve, surely? I thought it was either arthritis or maybe pain from my various breaks and fractures as I'm getting older now. I just don't know and neither, it seems, does the doctor.

I'm supposed to go back to the docs in about a week or so if the pain hasn't gone. I can't afford physio or a consultant.

I hope all goes well for you.
Physio and specialists are accessible in the NHS if your GP refers. Just have to wait a long time. Be flexible on appointment times if referred.

My wife and I have hybrids. We just got back from a 30 mile ride. She had to shake her hands out now and then when she noticed they were tingling/numb. Well, we've been back (off the bikes) for some 30 minutes now and her right hand is still numbish. She has feeling in it, but it tingles. What could be the problem?

(This isn't our first ride of this distance. We ride this distance pretty regularly.)
My wife got on much better re sore and numb hands after I fitted some specialized body geometry grips. They're ergonomically shaped and have a large 'flatter' area for the heel of the hand.

My shoulder seems a bit better. The acupuncture is maybe helping despite my scepticism.
Painkillers won't do much for a trapped nerve. You need to address the cause

Good to hear :okay:

Yeah. I was a bit disheartened when the doc only prescribed me painkillers. Not impressed.

Standard first treatment for anything musculoskeletal. Rest and pain relief. Next should be physio. So go back to the GP and ask for a referral. It's an 8-12 week wait here, so if same there, ask for advice on managing it in the meantime. Gentle exercises and also get a wheat heat pad. Can be soothing

A specialist wouldn't offer a lot else, depending on cause. Maybe a steroid jab rather than the pills

Yeah, I guess you're right.

I'm due back in on the 28th, so not long now. I'll try a wheat heat pad, got a few lying around somewhere.

Padding will make a good hand position better but will not cure a bad one.
Find your neutral wrist-set, ie position without and bend or kink; the one you might use in a punch.
Pick a bar/stem combo which permits this wrist, set along with flexed elbows and relaxed shoulders.
I switched from MTB flat-bars to swept-back On-One Mary and it solved a lot of my position issues.

Adjustable stems are useful tools for choosing a position.
Ergon grips are good.

Going to shove wine corks into her handlebars and hopefully find some good grips, and bar ends for multiple hand positions. The problem is; I need to find those things in pink. Because she's almost 6' tall she couldn't get a woman's bike. They don't make them big enough for her. So she has a men's bike and, as you know, men's bikes do not often come in feminine colors (not in our price range). So I have to try to accessorize her bike with pink in an effort to make it more feminine. Her bike frame is gun metal gray. I'd like to get her these pink bar ends, but can't find them for sale anywhere. And I'd like to switch her brake cable and shifting cables to pink also.
