Does anyone know about things Linux ?

I know nothing about it other than that there are different versions and that once upon a time you had to be quite geeky to make it work. On a scale of 1 to 10, my geek level is about a 3. I've built PC's in the past but have always installed whatever windows was current at the time. I even managed a duel boot win98 / xp setup once.

I quite fancy having a win10 / linux duel boot.

Does anyone know if someone at geek level 3 would be capable of doing this and what flavour linux would be best for me?

I've settled on Linux Mint since it comes with drivers for wifi that some other incarnations don't. If you can install Windows you can install a modern Linux distro. I always install the 'home' folder on a separate partition so that you can install a new version without losing your files. (If you don't understand that don't worry, just install Linux)

Well having started this thread, just thought I'd report back...

I've done something I never thought I would and that is to actively choose Windows 8.

I went back from 10 to 8, who'd have thought anyone would do that

Linux, nope, for me it still seems a bit tricky.

Linux Mint XFCE version 17.0 LTS 32 bit is a drop-in replacement for XP. We changed to it at the end of XP support. It's actually easier to use than Windows.
Retired five years ago and didn't need Windows for any of the work-related applications I had on my laptop and desktop. So I got rid of Windows OS and put on Ubuntu. I'm no techie but have had no problems at all with it's use. There are some applications I couldn't load because they were Windows based, but there are plenty of free alternatives that work just as well.
I don't know if it's just some kind of myth but I have been told that Linux based OS's are less prone to hacking and malware.
Malware is not normally a problem with a Linux system, I've been on linux for about eight years now, Ubuntu, Lubuntu, Mint and now Fedora, and I've never run a specific anti Virus or Firewall, obviously I run some security, NoScript and Better Privacy, but Linux specific malware is rare and its rare and unusual too see it in the wild.
