Windows 7 + email? (Outlook express gone!!)

My new laptop came loaded up with Windows 7, and it took me a while to realise that Outlook Express is no more. Microsoft tell me to use MS Live instead. I haven't tried very hard but I've failed to get it to work with my BT Internet email addresses.

So, question is, should I get it work, or try some other email software? Thunderbird and Firefox whilst I'm at it?

What do the experts use? Thanks in advance.

Thunderbird is very good. Not IME quite as easy to configure as Outlook Express or Outlook though - a little more work needed to get the preferences set the way you want them.

I like Thunderbird but I miss the ability to have different sounds playing depending on who the email is from; I used to have a particular sound if I had an email from work so I knew whether or not to run for the hills...!

I know there is/was an add-on that randomised the sound when email arrived, but I haven't found an add-on yet that can assign specific sounds to different accounts in Thunderbird. I wouldn't be surprised if someone somewhere isn't working away at one.

The laptop has Office 2007* loaded. Will Thunderbird use MS Word as a spellchecker or do I have to use soemthing else? Wifee insists on a spellchecker, and it would be unwise to disappoint Mrs Proto.

Have you tried using webmail? If you get on with it, no need for any extra software at all!
