Ordered a MacBook Air 2018. Upgraded to 512GB so as to maximise it’s usefulness when I give it to my daughter in years to come.

Apple ‘business’ passed on a discount which takes care of the interest on the amount I had to pay with my credit card.

With most things that I own, I like to sell the old items as I hate hoarding and I like that they pay towards the new stuff. However, not being an IT whizz I am nervous of the implications of this. There isn’t anything I’m worried about other than bank fraud and personal information (tax, kids photos etc)

Are the old lap tops ‘junk’? Or can I earn some pocket money from selling them on? How do I remove all my data?

Just make sure that you have totally scrubbed everything off the laptop before selling it.

There is plenty of advice available on how to do it - for example like this.
That's great for Win 10, but earlier Windows does not have the reset facilities. If one still has the original DVDs ( if the PC is that old), then use something like this to wipe the drive, then the new owner can re-install, or just sell the blank laptop for a reduced price.
Edit: @Heltor Chasca , if any of them have 4GB sticks of DDR2 RAM, colour me interrested!

I'm going to try to upgrade my old laptop from 7 to 10 and have got a new SSD to put in the laptop... does anyone know if I'll have to reinstall Win7 then upgrade to 10, or can i just bung the Win10 install USB straight into to an empty machine?

Thanks but no thanks. I think I'll pass.
I have a Sony Vaio with windows 10 and I hate it. It is so slow. I am thinking of changing the system to Linux. It's either that or get rid of the dam thing.

I may well take the plunge with Linux

I am a fan of Apple.

iPhone, iPad, MacBook Pro. Their gear appears expensive, but, in my experience, it lasts, and, it works. So, overall, not as expensive as it first appears.

My wife has a two year old Windows 10 Laptop, which I hate using.

We also have a couple of old laptops running Ubuntu, with free Office type software.

Have not tried a Chromebook, yet, but, I am tempted. Maybe, I will install the Chrome OS look alike on one of the old laptops, just to try it and see.

If you just want to use a laptop, and not "play" with it, I would opt for Apple.

Probably. It is getting on a bit now, but I have nothing to lose really.
If it's getting on a bit it's probably clogged up with all sorts of crap. Might be worth downloading everything you want to keep then reinstalling Win10. I did that (with Win7 -this laptop's probably even older than yours!) and, for example, the reboot time came down from 2mins+ to about 25secs. With similar improvements in performance for everything else. I think it took me an hour or so, and I can assure you I'm no techie.

Thank god because I'm not either. I am a bit of a luddite

My advice would be to keep going with Windows 7. Don't use it to view porn. When it does get a virus, install Linux Ubuntu. Just go to W H Smith, find a copy of. Linux magazine, which has an installation DVD in it. Then stick it in your laptop and just accept the defaults. I recently had to reinstall Linux on my PC. The first Linux magazine disc had Arch and Centos OS Linux. Centos OS would not install, while you need a degree in computer science to install Arch. Ubuntu is usually painless. I think Mint, OpenSuse and Fedora are too.
