Windows XP.... anyone going to keep on using it?

Xp is rock solid as an OS and as long as you have good anti virus software and a firewall you should be pretty safe. I would recommend 7 though, its the new XP

All our XP systems at work are gone, replaced, on the same hardware, with a system which is more intuitive than XP, with better built-in driver support than XP and better security than XP, all for zero cost. I am forbidden by the OP from revealing the name of this fantastic system, but if you want to know send me a PM.

The only reason I'll keep one laptop with XP running is for my car's diagnostic software. Although I think my latest acquisition will happily run on W7 so XP might get removed shortly. Work laptop is a Mac, and I run a W7 parallels virtual machine on that.

Whilst I wouldn't recommend W8 to anyone, W7 is a good robust OS now and a worthy replacement for XP.

I'm in work on my works PC which is still running Win 2000 There is a Win95 PC in the workshop (used to to talk to early 1990s telephone systems that some of our customers still use).

I used Linux at home for a long time and when my last PC motherboard died, I bought a second hand computer which came with Win XP and I said I would wait for the inevitable Microsoft problems to crop up and then install Linux. It is still working fine although my PC requirements are modest these days - just a little browsing and using Word to type up my short stories. I have no intention of buying anything else until forced to by component failure.

I have windows XP on my laptop. I had no idea anything was happening. So what exactly does this mean to people like me? I am a complete luddite when it comes to things like this, but I like XP, so is there any need for me to change it, or can I just carry on as normal?

I used Microsoft Me for 3 years after the support stopped at which point it was still just about usable but not great.

XP might last a bit longer given it has more users (not me - I have gone Linux)

so long as your firewall and antivirus software continues to support XP, I reckon it'll be fine. That's what I'm relying on anyhoo If you're relying on the built in windows firewall.. I'd advise getting a 3rd party one.

I've "flirted" with various Linux distro's in the past and they all seem to need command-line work which I'm not keen on (read crap at for that tbh) or they fail with Flash (which I hear is dying anyway) or can't see my wireless...... so I end up back with XP or W7 both of which I'm comfortable with....

Why can't any Linux work straight out of the box as MS & Apple do???

I only changed from XP to Win7 because my hard drive crashed and I had to install something on the new one.

A certain government organisation updated all their PCs (6000 +) but still kept XP as many apps didn't run under Win 7 or the expense of migrating was too much.
