Windy today ?

A bit lively in Coventry today, a strong gusting wind that keeps changing direction, I'm on holiday so didn't have to commute this morning. I was out on the fixed this morning running errands and it was a bit entertaining, going down the hill at the church end of Nunts Lane I was almost stopped by a big gust from the front, a few seconds later it was blowing from the side and shaking the handlebars. Coming back with a tail wind I was dragging the back brake to control the speed on the descent past the shops on Beake avenue, I didn't want to spin up over 30mph in case it switched to a side wind, I've topped 35mph on that descent several times in the past but didn't want to in this wind. I've a sunflower in the back garden which is just coming into flower, the wind is threatening to blow out the fence panel next to it, which would take the flower out with it.

Sods law for me it was all a side wind... I'd rather a headwind than a side wind. I had to go over the Runcorn Widnes Bridge as well, which as you can see here, is very open. Made it very hairy on the little path along side it on 23c rubber with peanut peds ignoring me then having a go at me because I wobbled due to being in a high gear.

Been over that bridge a few times on my mountain bike and it is very exposed. Wouldn't even attempt it in high winds.

North Wales hasnt avoided the wind at all. It is so windy that the wind turbines are not working (they are crap anyway).

Think I'll take the Marin into town later on the grounds that it's less likely to be swept up a la Dorothy/Toto.

no chance for me to commute today, local weather station is online, max gust at mo is 67mph, i'm not stupid.

My dad is going on a coach trip to Northern Ireland today. He should have gone from Stranraer but that was cancelled so coach was on it's way to Holyhead to leave on the 2:00 ferry. I wouldn't fancy doing that crossing today in this wind. The Irish sea can be rough on a good day

Well we cycled to school and back again without too much problems but it was hard work going to and from work ... at one point a tail wind .... (yeah!!), other times definitely a head wind and having to cycle downhill. My main worry is cycling along tree lined routes knowing it's the first strong wind for a bit and that the branches still have leaves on. Take care out there!

+1 for tree branches.

I recall 2 incidents involving them.
One where there was a small branch in the middle of the road between some speed bumps. I just avoided it but decided to move it out of the way. When I went back to my bike, this nice woman started asking me about my bike and said that she was thinking of commuting to asda's and back (where she works). I offered some good advice about which type of bike to go for etc...
Second, I was on a main road and it was pouring down. I went around a corner and saw a huge branch with leaves on in the middle of the road. At this point, there was a van approaching me from behind, I pointed at the branch and he slowed down. After we passed it, the van driver overtook me and thumbed up to me.

I do enjoy being of an assistance, no matter how little or big it is.

Luck today in that I missed all the flying branches going through Newcastle.That was avoiding the waggonways too which will certainly once again classified as branch lines.

Wow.....2 hours for a 15 mile detour - uphill into the wind most of the way. Scalped by an e-bike too - cheat!

I had the trailer on...a slab fronted block of sail-like material is definitely not what you want. Especially on a 1:3 climb into headwind!! Even on the trike in lowest gear my back was starting to get an imprint of the top bar across the top of the seat where I was pushing back.

I did have a small slight uphill section around a corner with a tailwind where I folded my arms and freewheeled slowly uphill

Thanks to all the very patient drivers out there tonight

What I want to know was where were all the roadies that are usually out that stretch around ringinglow/redmires eh? Bit of wind, frightened a leaf might scratch your carbon eh? Great soft jessies! Apart from e-biker only saw one old fella heading out into the wind on my way back

All was worth it for the 5 minutes exhilarating drop back into Sheffield with a tailwind. Nobody was even looking to overtake on the 50 stretch - not got a computer mounted yet but if I was doing 40 last weekend with more use of the brakes (clocked by a friend in a car behind), I know I was well over that speed. I think the trailer stopped rolling and just floated at one point...there is a warning on it "do not exceed 10mph...oops!

Think I saw you this morning, trailer with a flag on, going past Decathlon after 8 ish? Too windy for me to even try, was in the car, but will venture out tomorrow.
