I've just found an old pair of leg warmers that I haven't seen for a couple of years. I'll have to give them a try again because, with a good comfortable pair of shorts, they used to keep me just as warm as full length tights.

I find that as long as my core and extremities are kept warm i only need Alturas summer cruisers over padded shorts, i have tried the winter cruisers but i found them too restrictive to do any sort of distance. Although they do keep your legs warm.

Either or depends how cold it is. My thighs get cold so prefer the combo. If cold cold, sometimes Altura winter cruisers over roubaix tights
Altura winter cruisers ???
Will google that/them. I did a 26 miler today wearing shorts & tights. Was quite warm but this is autumn so will not be good enough for winter.

I like padded shorts underneath because I can stick with pads I like, and layer them up as much as I need. My favourite shorts have entered the indecent phase, but they still fit ok and the padding is in good order, so they have another winter or two left in them. I wear a merino base layer over them, and fleece tights as the weather cools. And I don't have to fuss so much about the tights: the padding next to me is perfect for me, and any tights will do as long as they are not so small they won't fit or so big that they bag.

I came off last year in the rain, and trashed a pair of tights. It was no tragedy as they were from Lidl. If I had destroyed a favourite pair of padded longs, that would have been a heart ache.
