Well my winter contact 2 premium's arrived today from Rose bikes in Germany. The tread pattern is like a mini-me version of our winter car tyres from conti.

The car tyres are amazing so hopefully these will be too....at £109 all inc tubes and delivery I hope so.

Did you get them in 700x37c? If so could you measure how big they are when mounted on the rim (hight and width) I've got some 35c marathon but may sway them out when it gets icy (6am commute for me) with something with a bit more grip.
Cheers.

Yeah will do but it'll be a while yet. I usually change the car tyres over when it's regularly below 7 deg cel and I'll do the same with the bike tyres. I have read tho they come up at about 34mm.

Yeah I'll be doing early morning commutes like 5:30 am. Now that I'm qualified and doing ad hoc shifts on the wards for this winter at least and then I'll be commuting to uni. This means my commutes will be at least 32 miles a shift and 2 times a week to uni at least, which is 42 miles.

This is why I went for the conti's, lugging all the iron work around on marathon winters was a pain in the ass.

Never gone for winter tyres but because of the early mornings involved with the new job I should invest in some.
They are worth it if you have no other options. Now I'm back down to one car and the fact that public transport that early in the mornings is a no no this far out in the stix, £110 is a no brainer.

I've got some Schwalbe ice spiker tyres (I think, though I've never needed them since I bought the buggers)
If you want to flog them, PM me.

I've used both Top Contact Winter II and Marathon Winter studded. Both are quite a lot better than standard tyres, and both still require the use of care to avoid falling off.
It's much as you might expect - Top Contact are quite a bit nicer to ride, but aren't as good when you are actually on ice, though I didn't spin out until the slope got to about 8%. Translate that to a cornering lean angle to get an idea of how far you could push a corner. This was on cold dry ice (-5° or so), not warm wet ice at around zero, which is a fair bit slippier.
Marathon Winter are by comparison fairly heavy and slow, not to mention noisy. On ice you should reduce pressure to get more grip. If you don't there may only be a couple of studs in contact with the ice, or even none if the ice surface is uneven and the stud is over a hollow. DAHIKT.

Winter tyres aren't absolutely necessary. It is possible to get round reasonably well on normal tyres (gatorskins or Conti 4 seasons), but you do have to take care. Taking care means paying very close attention to the road surface well ahead, and being prepared to slow right down to walking pace (gradually) if you think you may be on ice or about to run onto it.

I was thinking about this. Think I'll get the top contact winter 2's.
If things get too bad , I'll use my car which has had winter tyres on the last few years.
Last couple of years have been pretty bad.

@bromptonfb, Do you think that the premium (folding) version is worth the extra? I can get the top contact for 70, the premiums I can get for 110. It's a big difference to just save 100g over both tyres. Is there anything else they add?

It will be interesting to see how you get on. My snow studs are sat in the cupboard waiting for their third winter but it would be nice to have something a little less slow for winter audaxing.

On my commuter I normally run 40mm Marathon Plus Tour on the front and due to clearance 38mm Marathon Plus on the back. For winter im going to try a Marathon Winter on the front which is waiting for the cold weather, £30 from bike-discount.de
