My D-I-L wants some of the above for her pressie. I know nothing about them, quality, universality or brand. Up to £150 as it's a combined present with others.

What are they going to be used for? Ipod, TV? Do they need to be portable or for home use only?

Richer Sounds might be a worthwhile port of call.

Thats a serious suggestion and not a witty retort by the way.
I know how and where to shop in Brighton and the internet but I was hoping someone knowledgeable might have some specialist advice as to worth/value etc

I don't know how much the plural matters, but I reckon one o' these looks like it would do the business quite nicely. Don't have it, but I do have their teeny-tiny minx speakers and they're amazing.

If it's for home use then as with most AV stuff then there will be compromises at your price point. The best advice would be like when you are buying a bike, have a look and more importantly a listen and make your choice from there.

If I was buying for me then it would be this:

If it is for a smallish room the the Sonos Play:1 is a good start. The advantage of Sonos is that you can add to the system and it is probably the best home streaming system out at the moment. You won't have to have wires between the speakers if you add more. Disadvantage is that this doesn't take batteries so will need to be plugged in, also a little over your budget.

I use two, the best quality one is a Bose Soundlink, which is just over your budget. Superb sound and solid construction

However this is a little heavy for travelling so I use an Phillips Shoqbox which i lighter and more robust, but lacks the quality of the Bose

You're spot on....Bose is quality!

The other thing with this Bose is that it can have a protective shield that also enables customisation...

...and a travel case.

I would however rotate the speaker through 90 degrees so the stiffened parts of the cover protect the speakers

Finally it has Bluetooth, but also works via a 3.5mm audio input

The staff in Richer Sounds are very knowledgeable and helpful. They seem to be quite honest too.
