Austen is often regarded as Britain's greatest novellist. For example, F.R. Leavis, who was a renowned academic and critic, wrote that the four best novellists in the British tradition were Jane Austen, George Elliot, Joseph Conrad and Henry James. He then wrote about Elliot, Conrad and James, but said Austen deserved an entire book to herself. So Austen merits being on a banknote. I have only read Pride and Prejudice, which was surprisingly readable, although it didn't change my life.
