I took on Bushcombe lane this morning, and sort of managed it...I got caught part way up the 1:3 section and didn't have enough traction to get going again as it was wet and slippery (or breath if I'm honest) so had to push for about 40ft to someones driveway so I could get enough of a run to get clipped in properly. I stopped about 4 times on the climb, and it really is a massive test of both strength and stamina..It is a beast of a hill for sure. I doff my cap (or cycle hat) to anyone who can manage it in one hit :becool:

Just out of interest. How many teeth on your large rear cog/ small chain ring?
Great pics. They really give you an idea of the steepness.

If any consolation it really began to lash down when i got to the top. It was fairly nasty on the descent and i forgot to carry my overshoes so got properly wet feet

Unless I got my numbers wrong, there are 39 teeth on the small ring on the front mech, and 25 on the big ring on the rear mech (lowest gear)
It means diddly squat to me so I'm either Hero or Zero ^_^
Either way, I've only been back in the saddle properly since the end of July so pleased that I'm managing to conquer some other big ones....they are all 1:4 around this way in places when you try and climb onto the hills.

For someone who isn't used to climbing that's going to be quite tough to get up that hill without stopping on that ratio.

What I have actually found when climbing this particular hill was the amount of force I actually had to put into the bars when climbing it...to the point that it was quite bruising in my pecs and shoulders trying to hold the bike steady to pedal (and press down on them). I normally ride on the hoods, but I tried hanging off the bars...it didn't make any real difference, but meant that I then struggled to get back on the hoods because I was putting so much effort into trying to pedal
Anyhow, that is another one I can tick off the list, there are another four 1:4 climbs out of the town I can have a go at...but realistically for me one big climb a ride is more than enough for me

You're not alllowed to tick it off the list until you've got to the top without stopping.

It's the law.

Ah, perhaps I need a granny ring added to the front to kill this particular one ;) . I'll return to it, but as you can see the road is wet, and as much of it is covered by trees and what has fallen off them, will probably remain that way now until the spring. I'd like to do these climbs twice a week to retain my fitness as I don't think doing a ride like this once a week is enough, but without commuting on the bike in the winter months, my mileage is right down from 75+ miles per week to now about a dozen (which is why I'm hitting the hills now on these once weekly rides to make them a proper workout) I've come a long way since starting back, and really don't want to slip back now.

Wow, impressive!!

:bravo: You're a hero in my books chief. Not only does Bushcoombe Lane thrash the pants off the hills I have to deal with, it smacks both bum cheeks with a wooden spoon. The steepest I have to content with is a 16% section.
