In one place I worked the following notice seemed to work:

"On Sunday evening this fridge will be cleared and any food left in here binned"

Stopped the primeval build-up a treat.

Edit: Oh, hang on, they'd need to go in the fridge wouldn't they ...
Stick them in the freezer overnight then take them to work the next morning.

They should thaw out but still be cold by midday.

I dare not even go near our fridge, to be fair I try and avoid most of the kitchen work surfaces.

I would never use either of the microwaves in the canteen. The fridge on the odd occasion we have visitors then I will put a pint of milk in otherwise no.

We have ovens for drying insulation materials (Transformer manufacturer) they sit all day at 130C - perfect for warming through a pie for lunch.

If you are wondering where the Antarctic ice shelf is going, it's moved to the freezer box in our works fridge.

We believe sell/use by dates to be a modern day scam. if something is obviously not growing on it or living in it, it's fine to eat.
If it's not yet sentient, it's ok to eat.

My father drew wire from rods in a steel mill. They used to remove a brick or two from the sides of the lead/zinc baths used to galvanize the wire as it was drawn through dies, to heat their sandwiches, some sort of calzone thing.
