World book day is soon and obviously anything that encourages reading for children (and adults) is a great idea but........

Having to send your child to school as a literary character can cause unwanted stress and heated 'conversations' between the child's parents...... This years conversations.......

Mrs V: He can go as Wheres Wally?
So we buy some red fabric paint and Mrs V paints red stripes on a white shirt.......
Mrs V: That look s**t he's not wearing that!
Me: I'll give it some thought on my commute.......
Gets to work and rings Mrs V.....
Me: Willy Wonka, his wedding waistcoat, a bow tie, top hat and cane....
Mrs V: His mate is going as him.
Me: Bl***Y Harry Potter then!
Mrs V: There'll be thousands of Harrys...
Me: Get a doctors dress up set then and he can go as Doctor Zhivago......
Mrs V (loudly): YOUR NOT HELPING MUCH!
Phone goes Click Buurrrrrr........
Phone rings later
Mrs V: He's going as a dragon.....
Me: Out of what book?
Mrs V: Theres enough books with dragons in.....Think of one..................
Phone goes Click Buurrrrrrr again

Let him stay at home and Skype him into school on a massive widescreen.

th

You might have to paint on the tash tho...

One that I have seen done cheaply is the Victorian urchin.......

A hat, waistcoat, collarless shirt and trousers all suitable "distressed" and then apply black makeup to exposed arms, legs and feet to simulate "grubbinesss"

I am the registered keeper of a small boy......trust me, no simulation of grubbiness could ever approach the natural state......

It was fancy dress at my son's nursery/kindergarten yesterday. So we put together a bat outfit. (He's been singing a norwegian song about a bat for the past two weeks). It's so much more fun doing it the homemade way.

We are sending our daughter dressed as a clown but this is the only book with a clown in we knew . Ah well I'm sure they won't have too many nightmares
