It seemed more attritional than tactical, it was a brutal race, akin to Yorkshire and Edinburgh. I don't think many riders were playing it safe, they were literally having to sit and recover for 5-10min stretches. I saw on the EF insta that Ben Healey did the GP Montreal at 334 NP for 5+hrs with 1hr 20 cumulative time above threshold. That is pretty insane and the world's is 50km longer!

The person who closes the gap in this situation will 100% lose the race. So, they want someone else to do it. No one has much left to give, a few might have a little bit. Yes, it's group 2 syndrome, but this was not a bad case of it, simply due to how attritional it was an MvdP & Matthews being in group 2 which means almost everyone will lose the sprint and MvdP has Matthews, who has worked a lot less, to worry about in the sprint, which means he can't really close it only to have Matthews beat him.

Awesome race. Incredible from MvdP actually. Destroyed Wout and tried to make the race. Probably one of his best races. Much stronger than I would have thought. Seemed to me to be in his best ever shape today.

Great job by the USA having Simmons in the lead and then having numbers to counter attack when the lead group got brought back. Perfect team execution. It's what Belgium should have done with WVA & Remco. Neither had the legs today.
