it gives people the impression that cycle touring is something to be afraid of or is difficult and expensive.
That's certainly one way of looking at it.
I see it as giving people an option of doing something that they might want to do but are put off by the hassle of organising it all etc. As I said, it's an option I'd take if I could afford it. Leaves you to concentrate on and enjoy the cycling. Which is, after all, what many are after.
On a smaller scale, if I could afford to cycle tour and stay in hotels with decent beds and showers, and eat decent meals then I would, believe me! Especially as I get older. The novelties of camping and boiling up pasta/rice night after night soon wears thin!
Edit: I wonder if Crispin wants any unpaid volunteers to go along?
