Feel a bit silly worrying, has this pain on my left shoulder and runs down my top left hand side to just below the collar bone for the last two and a half weeks. Decide to go to the doc yesterday (never like going). The doc used his hand and press on a spot just below my collar bone and there was a sharp pain. He suggested that I should have an chest x-ray. I said I cycle quite a bit, has that got anything to do with it. He didn't say anything and said have a x ray and see what it is. So I went to the hospital had the x ray done. Today as I walked in after work my wife said the surgery called about the x-ray. Now am really worried as I only had the x ray yesterday. I called the surgery back and the receiption said the doc have seen the x ray and theres nothing to worry about, but the doc has refer you to see a chest clinic as is normal procedure. I said if the doc said there's nothing to worry why I need to go to the chest clinic? All she said is normal. Now I am really worried as I had surgery on my left chest when I was in my late teens. Can't stop thinking about it.

The doctor has seen the x-ray and there is nothing visible to explain the pain you have. So is he sending you to the chest clinic to explore further in case there's something that doesn't show up on x-rays?

You have pain with no visible pathology on a plain chest film. All good news so far. You therefore need to see a chest physician for assessment and diagnosis. All routine do far.

X-ray turnaround is pretty quick these days. Digital image, reported by radiologist and archived on a PACS system. Your doc can log in at the surgery to see x-ray and read report. All done the same day mostly.

I don't know as the receiption said is just normal procedure.

Just out of curiosity have you been given a 2 week referral or a routine referral to a chest clinic?

I think is routine. As she said is normal procedure and nothing to worry. I ask the question when will I hear anything, she said leave it for a week and if I haven't heard then phone the hospital.

Look this is all good. I had a friend who didn't follow up his doctors suggestion to see a chest specialist - I won't go into the details, but his life would have been much better if he had.

Be glad you have a proactive doctor, not one that says "pulled muscle" and gives you a paracetamol.

Edit: My doctor will happily call a patient after a session, to save you coming in. See if you can have a word with your doctor, that should ease your mind.

Edit 2: I missed this

I bet this makes them a lot more conservative with any possible issues. I had a friend with only one kidney, and he had his renal function tested every six months.

We scanned a patient of 90 who only had one kidney, consequent investigation showed that she had never had a second one... and never noticed
