My Skoda is out of action (starter motor) and the suspension is getting really noisy.

I've seen a 2009 x trail 2.0dci for little money and wondered if they were ok?

The 09 plate is the old square design. Pretty solid cars. We have a 2012 Qashqai which has been faultless. The older diesels have less emission gubbins so may attract ULEZ charges depending where you live.

The 09 is the facelift, so you'll get decent satnav too. If it's the SD card version you can get updates off ebay. Just check MOT history for any possible corrosion issues - do check subframes etc as you would any car.

So I went and had a look at it. All seems ok.

Oil pressure light comes on at idle but goes off whilst driving.
Sounds sweet and powerful enough. It's a 2wd.
Is only £600 which most are spares repair at that price.

Subframe sills etc look ok.

Pick up tomorrow.

Cheap oil filter, perhaps? They can cause such problems.

Either way, I'd have walked on by on that point alone. Still, its a done deal so fingers crossed for you.

Id run in the opposite direction. Even at £600.

Sounds like engine maybe worn out if oil light comes on at idle. Worn big ends, failing oil pump etc. Anything more than few months life will be a bonus.

Why would this be an issue?

Because it indicates low oil pressure. A warm engine on idle with an oil pressure light is a very typical warning sign.

If the Engine oil levels are normal (if they're not, this raises other potentially serious questions) then there are a few possibilities.

1. Oil passage blockages either within the engine or in the oil filter.
2. Faulty Sensor/wiring
3. Wrong Oil type.
4. Knackered bottom end, either bearings or rings (but rings are usually accompanied by clouds of smoke)
5. Knackered oil pump.

Diesels do have a habit of hiding serious engine damage more than petrol in my experience because they are noisier, smoke a bit anyway and run higher compression ratios and so if the fuel injection system is good, will happily self destruct themselves and still try to fire with half of the block exited all over the road...

If you're feeling lucky, go for it, but if it's my money, i'd already be 3 miles down the road. Doesn't seem like a game of russian roulette with a worthwhile prize.

Is that likely with a nearly fsh?
I'm taking a good mate to pick it up so we could ask for a refund of the £150 deposit?

A FSH is a sign that it was serviced regularly, but it doesn't tell you how it was driven, was it towing caravans all of it's life? Was it thrashed? But even so, Engine failures do happen.

My advise as a stranger on the internet would be to try and get the money back and look elsewhere.
