Worst abuse in 10 years of central London commuting... by another cyclist

Hello, long time reader, very rare poster, but I have a warning to share.

I've had a quite jarring ride home from work tonight. As the title says, I've been commuting in and around central London for over 10 years and generally have no problems beyond the usual inattentiveness from others - certainly no serious run ins beyond the very rare bit of shouting warnings if I'm about to get squashed. I like to think I have reasonable discipline and awareness and don't put anyone in danger.

So, cycling home tonight I get to Putney Hill heading towards Wimbledon. I stop at some red lights and once they've turned green pull away. At this point another cyclist comes by, perhaps not having needed to slow for the lights or perhaps having put in a spurt to get round me. He pulls in front and I match his pace, perhaps a couple of feet back, certainly not dangerously close. He looks like a proper cyclist, wearing lycra shorts, and he's pulling a good pace.

Within literally a couple of seconds he blows his nose straight down, which I can feel hitting my legs. Charming I think, though I give him the benefit of the doubt - perhaps he thought I wasn't there. One second later he blows that idea away by turning round and screaming, "stop tailgating me you F--KING C--T". He stops pedalling at that point and I pull alongside - albeit in the middle of the road as he's clearly a bit, um, vexed.

The next 30 seconds is a bit surreal as he continue screaming, and I mean screaming in a red faced I will tear your throat out sort of way, that: a) he's going to f--king kill me  I'm a f--king c--t c) let's pull to the side of the road so he can f--king kill me and d) I'm going to call the police. All the while with me attempting to say sorry and perhaps he might like to calm down a bit.

d) was a bit surreal to be honest. I wasn't sure if he was planning to call them before or after he killed me. Perhaps he'd let them know where my body was.

When I realised he was quite serious about doing me harm and no reasoning could be done, I sprinted off up the road with him screaming he was going to come and bleeping kill me or somesuch, and I didn't turn round until I hit home a few miles later. I'm very grateful that I was able to leave him behind and that traffic and traffic lights went in my favour - I wouldn't like to have been caught by him.

To be honest this has shaken me quite a bit. You go through life assuming most people are pretty normal, perhaps a few are a bit angry and aggressive, but most are pretty stable. In all my years I have never met someone who exploded like that. He was/is a grade A psycho with a fuse measured in the microseconds.

So, a warning: should anyone who travels that way see a slightly skinny, lycra short wearing guy with a 'tache on a hybrid with handlebars set very high and quite far forward, whatever you do, steer well clear. This guy is quite simply dangerous.

And should he be reading this, which seems unlikely, then I have this to say: I hope you seek medical/anger management help pretty soon. I seriously wonder how you can function in society without it. I wonder what sort of job, friends or family you have who accept the sort of behaviour you showed me tonight.

Apologies for the length of this posting - it was quite cathartic writing it at least. Thanks for reading everyone and watch out!

Now't so queer as folk, and that's a fact. Remind yourself that it's not your fault and sooner or later Mr C*** is going to come across someone with a less balanced view of his potty mouth.

Reg'ed in 2007 and 6 posts! That is some serious lurking Mr tea.

Wow how bizarre. Very strange behavior. He obviously has issues. Best steer clear of people like that. Don't let it get you down, you carry on enjoying your cycling. He's going to do the same to the wrong person one day with a whole different outcome.

Scary stuff.

My immediate reaction was, “Lamp the little f**ker and then discuss his issues later”...but having said that, I don’t have the full picture and to be honest Paul neither do you, something must happened to this guy to have made him so aggressive towards a perfectly common cycling practice...or maybe something real bad happed to him that day...who knows.

Not your fault and 10 years of commuting will be testimony to the fact that you are not the common denominator here.

Hope it didn’t shake you up too much…have you ever seen him before on your route…are you concerned you will see him again? If so, there’s no shame is staying clear and taking a different route.

Good luck

Oh…and welcome

Sorry this happened to you mate,it is certainly a very rare occurance and obviously very unsettling if it does happen.

I had a pretty hair raising event with at least four cabs coming off of Waterloo Bridge tonigh...No it wasn't buses for once...I was very patient with the buses tonight but with these cabs they all seemed to be driving crap/cutting up/not paying attention etc etc so in the end I got the hump and started playing them at their own game and deliberately getting in their way.Oh I even swore at the first one because he seemed to be passing too close...then there were boy racers in Walthamstow...

I wondered what the hell was this all about tonight esp with the boy racers and penis envy...Wondering if it was a full moon....

Would you believe it when I looked up at the moon...if that isn't a full moon it's f'kin close as well.

Sorry had to get this off of my chest.

Sorry to hear about this. What an peanut. Don't let the bastard grind you down - one psycopath in a decade ain't so bad. Carry on enjoying your riding and put it behind you.

His rage sounds a bit pharmaceutical, if you ask me.

The wee present he left on your clothes - yellow or white?

Or...hmm...was he an unexpectedly muscly-looking little guy?

Sorry to hear about that, I hope this does not put you off cycling in London.

This sounds like something to report to the police. Who knows they could probably take samples of the snot he left on his clothes. That way if he ever does act on those words to somebody then he will find himself in prison very soon.

I'll keep an eye out for him if I'm round that way in my truck. Seriously, you did the right thing just getting away from him, he sounds like an peanut.

Yep, he sounds like a nutter. Either chemically induced or he had a really bad day at the office.

You've done really well to avoid unpleasantness for so long Paul. Credit to you, you're obviously a near saint on the road and must have huge amounts of patience. For that, I applaud you.

You just got unlucky yesterday. Simply playing the percentages, you're bound to get a run-in of some type or other at some time or other. But it sounds like you have the right sort of attitude to deal with it, i.e. shrug your shoulders and carry on. Keep an eye of for him though... and keep of his rear wheel!!

You are quite right. I did wonder if I was the 100th person to "tailgate" him that evening and he just snapped at me. Or maybe something else bad had happened to him. I struggle to believe he's like that normally as you wouldn't get very far in life with that approach to confrontation. I'm usually very good at remembering bikes (less good with faces!) and I'm sure I've never seen this person before.

One thing it has done is made me rethink how close I get to people. I'm certain I wasn't too close to this particular guy but I will draft other people if they look like the sort of experienced serious cyclists that wouldn't mind (flash road bike, lycra, pulling 20+mph, London Dynamo kit etc). Perhaps I won't in the future.

Thanks everyone for the responses! I do feel better about life in general this morning and certainly won't let him stop me riding to work. Hopefully I'll have a nice uneventful trip today!

I can't imagine this guy is anything other than unhinged to behave in that manner.
He can't carry on like that all the time because one day he'll meet someone that doesn't care for his attitude and he'll get a smack in the mouth.
No-one normal enjoys confrontation like that and it sounds like you handled the situation really well. Glad it hasn't put you off your commute.

I'm quite impressed at how well you handled the incident! What a nutter! He's clearly not a very good cyclist, quite apart from being a raving loon.
