I've done various DIY jobs and they're all naff at the time.
But the worst, was stripping between 15-20 coats of paint ( I counted 9 different shades of paint, some of it lead) from two 100 year old cast iron fireplaces. Took me 5 days to do both, with chemical strippers and elbow grease.
The result though, was well worth it.
