The whole simple menace of the film was its strength with Carpenter's pervasive and increasingly sinister sound track made it one of my favourites

The 2005 remake was not a patch on the original

Speaking of Carpenter, the 1950s "The Thing" is a great film, and so is Carpenter's remake.

I like the remake of Psycho, it's well acted and stylish. Very watchable.

I might have put Godzilla forward, but the original (for all its significance) is completely unwatchable.

I submit "Lost in Space" '98.

It's bland. It hints that they could have bought a script and a plot, but sank the money into Matt LeBlanc instead.

It's just...devoid of significance.

Ok, I'll give you Judge Dredd (never been a comic reader, so my previous knowledge of Dredd was the Dreddful Stallone movie), but as a big fan of the original series, I have to say I loved the Lost in Space movie. Liked Matt LeBlanc's interpretation of Don as a self-obsessed moron (not a Friends fan, so he wasn't a draw for me), and I enjoyed the whole nonsense. It's not like the series was actually very good, so they were hardly ruining something.

RoboCop (2014)

Good shout... that was f*ck*ng s*ite.

It has its moments - and it is surprising how quaint the original can seem at times, with Robocop's '80s hi-fi component finish armour. Not to mention the preposterous ideas that corporations would become de facto governments, that Detroit would become a post industrial wasteland, that the Police would become heavily armed paramilitary forces etc etc.

The shame about Robocop 2014 is the extent of the opportunity it missed. In Padilha, it had a director used to material questioning the extent of Police power and brutality in high crime areas, with a good eye for action (see his "Elite Squad" films). There were also some interesting things that could have been said about drones, and the rise of what some US commentators have referred to as "the Warrior Cop". Instead, they ended up with a film that was, for the most part, frustratingly unrealised potential.

The Ring, The Grudge, Dark Water... Pretty much any remake of Asian films. They have completely the wrong aesthetic.

Last House on the Left, Hills Have Eyes and Night of the Living Dead are also pretty hopeless, like Texas Chainsaw Massacre mentioned earlier. Though I did quite like Night of the Living Dead, more than the original re-release in colour. Ben in a pastel blue cardigan is not a badass.

There are pretty convincing signs that a Hellraiser remake is on the cards. I hope it's good (like Mad Max: Fury Road) but I fear the worst.

The English remake of Girl with the Dragon Tattoo was also pointless.

Of course. Oscars have got nothing to do with quality. Most of the time the films that win aren't even the best films nominated, which themselves aren't the best (mostly) American films that year, which certainly aren't usually the best films in the world that year.

given the title is "worst remake" I think you're being a little harsh to "lost in space". I recall the original tv series being pretty ropey, even as an undemanding 8 year old who happily hoovered up any and all sci fi of the day such as the various Irwin Allen series like time tunnel, and the submarine one, various 50s movies and so on.

It would be quite a claim to say the movie was worse than the tv series
