Following on from a similar thread, are you happy to go on holiday for two weeks and leave your "adult" children who've yet to "fly the nest" in charge of the family home?

If I had kids then it would depend on their temperament.

My parents left me alone in the house for two weeks when I was 17. There weren't enough people I liked at that age to want to invite them round for a party.

I would be fine about leaving my 18yo son at home alone, though I know my wife would worry unduly - more about his safety than any likelihood of him wrecking the place.

I remember when my parents went away when my older brother was 19 - so it was the first time they had been alone for 19 years. They came back giggling like teenagers - I think they had fallen in love all over again. That passion lasted the rest of their lives.

Go on, leave them to themselves - as long as they don't turn your house into a meth lab, it's unlikely to be a total disaster. Enjoy yourself.

My eldest son (who is a complete bugger) has looked after the house for 2 weeks each summer since he was 17, that's 5 years now. I am always surprised to find it still standing when we get back and know for sure somebody else does a manic clean up before we return. No problems. :okay:

I've left them in charge for a night but the ones that are old enough are mostly not here. And I'm not quite ready to leave the youngest who I think would be ok but would live on rubbish food .... plus I'm never quite sure if you should leave child under 16 on their own overnight or longer.

I was left on my own at 15 and set fire to the kitchen and smoke damaged 3 other rooms.

Our kids fortunately faired a lot better when left alone, even down to cutting the grass and putting bins out.

We left out two on their own for a week in the summer and I don't think we worried unduly. They're both 18 and were working most days. No strange stains on the carpet, and I can't remember what they ate. They did have friends round, but no smoke damage.

Mrs Cube confirms that they didn't eat much of what she bought for them and suspects they survived on cereal and takeaways. She also thinks Cubester's girlfriend organised a tidy up.
