Not a huge fan of FB but it does have it's uses and it's good to hear of it used in the way you have mentioned in your post.I know what you mean, but FB can have real human value.
A few weeks ago, I decided to post a life event on FB. Not the sort of thing I'd normally advise someone else to do, but there were a lot of people that needed know, and I was sick of telling them one at a time. Death by a thousand "oh, i'm so sorry". 9am the next morning 2 friends arrived at my door to check I wasn't dead, and as I was ok, take me to coffee. Couldn't have been more perfect, but I would never have reached out to them.
And last night a friend let people know her mother was in hospital with a suspected heart attack - on the other side of the world from me. I'm glad she shared, I could reach out on FB and give her a hug.
