Something that I tried with considerable success was to wrap presents in aluminium foil. It's a lot cheaper than wrapping paper and a large roll will cover loads of presents. It also has the advantage of staying put when you fold the ends down which removes the need for a second pair of hands for the sellotape.
I always used to do that, Vernon...with the addition of a bit of Guttermann thread inside and a tab with a hand-crafted "Pull Here" festive tab. I felt so smart doing it in such a fashion...about 45+ years ago, mind - when Alcan foil was as thick as car bodywork, only marginally less thick than the cupcake foil of Lyons chocolate cup cakes!
