Wrapping your chain in insulating tape

I noticed on TikTok that the Japanese cyclist’s wrap the chain of their brand new bicycle in electrical insulating tape. The video showed it being done and the explanation was the chain doesn’t make any noise (?) and the chain lubricants doesn’t leak out nor dirt and rain entering the rollers. Anybody do this or is this fake news?

The teeth of the cassette and chainring sprockets will have to pierce the tape, in order for bike to function normally.

At best, the tape will get messy quickly, while exposing chain to elements as usual.

At worst, messy tape get jammed and you meet the grim reaper.

The internet needs a fact police force to hammer stuff like this that isn't clearly labelled as fake/funny!

Sounds like bull5hit to me, how would the tape stay on, couple of gearshifts and it would be chewed to bits with all that crap stuck in the sprockets.

I do it all the time. I find that the earth tape works best. That's the green and yellow striped tape. You can see the bike I do it with in my avatar.

Can’t say I tried the tape on the Chain trick. But I do religiously Cling-film my tyres to keep the dirt off when riding……

The other trick is to keep the bike in the box it came in.

After extensive research, for both chain wear and other applications, I find condoms to be superior prophylactics than electrical tape.

I had a friend in big industry in 1980’s they started to get their bikes made in India. When pointing out in quality control there was marks on the paint work. The Indian staff were perplexed as to why this was an issues. It turns most people there leave the cardboard packaging on the frame to protect it,so no one’s sees the paint work.

I prefer Elastoplast strip, the stretchy cloth one. I fit it with a hammer and chisel while singing a song, Square Taper is great, hollow axle is for little girls, since my girlfriend left me I became engaged to a Nigerian romance scammer.

They need to test neatly wrapping tape over the inner plates instead of wrapping the circumference of the chain, in the name of science.
