Outside cycling consider the 'boot' or 'bonnet' of a car.

If we are stepping outside of cycling, then I would like to add the term Barter...when people mean haggle...winds me up every time

No, it's the shape of the whole thing that makes it a fork. If you're thinking of the bits where the wheel attaches, I would call those dropouts, although a quick google suggests that some may disagree with me and call them forkends!

The only thing I've ever found to be waterproof is my house. Go out in the rain and no matter what you're wearing the water will find it's way in eventually.

I'll meet you half way. A cassette is the plastic case AND the tape. Not just the plastic case. If you decide to argue back i'll turn this thread into another pro high viz and helmet thread/debate!

Sorry but no deal. It is a diminutive of case and clearly only refers to the container; except in popular usage of course, where your interpretation wins hands down.
