A smaller toothed sprocket giving a slightly larger range, as standard freehubs can only go to 11

As above, XD can be 10 upwards.

I use sram XD and standard
If I'm honest I find the 11-42 better than 10-42 as the gearing just seems better in the ratios

What are the real benefits?

More profits for SRAM when the stupidly small sprocket wears out stupidly quickly, and you have to buy another stupidly expensive cassette.
