Luxury. I started with a Tandy Trash 80-100. 8k memory and a 300 baud modem. Software written personally by a Mr Gates. Whatever happened to him?

Now that's what I call back to BASICs!

Be careful if you decide to install Norton anti-virus software. I installed Norton 360 a fortnight ago and it wouldn't contact Norton for Live Updates. I got through to their teckies who took remote control of my PC. Two hours later that had pretty much b#ggered it. A day later they called to fix the problem, took remote control .....and completely trashed the machine. No access to Windows, and no way to boot up in Safe Mode.

I will take the greatest delight in forwarding this post to Symantec:thumbsup:

Well get something decent like Avast then. Much better IMO than Norton, Macafee or (sadly these days) AVG bloatware.

Bah with 48k i can take over the world......as soon as i have finished typing in the program:whistle:

"640k should be enough for anybody"
- William Henry Gates III

Apparently he never said that (or at least he denies having said that, but then he would, wouldn't he?).

Harold H. Aitken did once say that the U.S had a need for maybe 50 computers in research laboratories which would meet the needs of the country. Who he? One of the original computing pioneers, he invented the Harvard Mark I - this was no Colossus but it did help the Allies win WWII. His statement may have been ahead of its time, as the world reverts back to more centralised computing, storing our information in the "cloud" (spit) and the devices we use being little more than terminals.

Back on topic, I quite like Dell computers, you just need to be prepared to stand down the hard sell of the extra guff they want to get you to buy, and work out what you actually need beforehand.

The debate over thick and thin clients has been going on for year and will probably continue to do so for the foreseeable future.

I used to be a big fan of Dell but experience in recent years has been anything but good. We are now a Dell free zone and get by on Sony and Apple who continue to be excellent IME.

I think it will carry on as long as we use computers. Its one of the great circles - people walk round the edge of the circle to get to one side, and say doesn't it look nice over there? so they head to the other side, and look back and think, wasn't that such a nice way to do things?
