Sorry, just seen this post. That's hilarious. It's blatantly your entire objective in diverting this thread

Nope. Wear a helmet or not entirely up to the individual.
Oh you did say you were going to find out about the cyclist in question.
Did you?

Thought not.

This offender has just been convicted of murder, rightly so.

Good news, thanks. (and here's a better website to read about it: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c6e3xg5we9eyo )

Because the cyclist ended up with a fractured skull as he landed on his head by looks of the video. If he had a helmet on I strongly suspect his injuries be a lot less.
Obviously wearing of a cycle helmet isn't normally done in case of a nutter throwing you to the ground but I'm curious to know if he had one on.

Why you think it's an odd question is in itself odd. Didn't it occur to you that a head injury might have been prevented by wearing one?

I always wear a helmet when on the bike, but I take it off when I go in a cafe mid ride.

Perhaps I need to rethink that. You never know !

If facing a confrontation and you can't expedite a swift exit.

1. Unclip your lid strap to prevent getting a broken neck of they grab your lid.
I'm curious about this advice. They can grab your hair, ears, or neck—so how is that different from grabbing your helmet? I’m well-trained, but this is a genuine question.

Having had to defend myself from a very serious physical attack, I cannot imagine being in a similar situation with a helmet flopping on my head because it was unclipped. If I were wearing a helmet, I’d want it held snugly in place, like my army helmet used to be.

Your ear will come clean off with the sudden application of as little as 6lbs of force. Therefore, unlike a helmet, grabbing your ear can neither break your neck or strangle you.

Sure, there are other methods by which an aggressor could strangle you or break your neck, but why hand it to them on a plate?

This is but one tiny tip from an internationally taught syllabus, one that has been written following the review of literally tens of thousands of incidents of tactical contact between cyclists and assailants. If you've conducted even more in-depth research and know different then be my guest, but having both taught this and, perhaps more importantly, experienced it myself first hand on multiple occasions, I'll stick to what I know works.

When youve done it for real a few times please let us know how you got on and we can compare notes.

If youve the shekels its worth buying this https://www.amazon.co.uk/Complete-Guide-Public-Safety-Cycling/dp/1284256138 which covers one of the two syllabus' that Im qualified to teach. The other one you cant get unless youve signed up as a member and done the course yourself.

In that broad context, we had a tragedy locally which involved a young girl of 4 climbing a tree with her helmet on.

A bit of a false choice really.
In any case those imprisoned for social media posts have tended to be inciting arson and murder, which is pretty serious

What ‘choice’? I compared an offence where someone laid hands on another (and occasioned actual bodily harm) with another offence where someone wrote they did not care if people were endangered.

It’s not polite to wear your hat indoors :-)

You obviously think a head hitting the road is different if pushed by someone as opposed to falling off a bike.
Whereas the impact will be the same.
It won't. Falling from being pushed is likely to cause an impact to the side of the head, but it's the top of the head which is protected by a cycle helmet. Roughly the area above 50mm above the "equator" of the head. They're to protect against "taking a header" over the handlebars, basically.

So it is indeed basically irrelevant.

Except if you actually watch the video of the incident being discussed you'll see the cyclist hits the back of his head not the side.

since the 'cyclist' is stood with their feet firmly on the ground at the start of the footage, i reckon at the time of the assault they're in fact a pedestrian... and had this thug assaulted a pedestrian, would you be asking what kind of hat they were wearing?

Mod Note:
The point is that there's a specific place for helmet debates and since Binky is determined to turn this thread into a helmet discussion, I'm merely suggesting they start that debate where it belongs.
This above please.
Please do not derail this thread into a helmet debate.
@Binky you could start a thread on this poor cyclist wearing a helmet or not in the helmet forum.
Here we are debating the sentence of the guilty part.
Any more helmet diversions on this thread by anyone will result in a thread ban.
Cheers from the mods.
