@Cunobelin  I've survived that so far. I know when my dad died & I executored (word?) his estate, everyone official including his bank required proof of his death to close or move stuff without him being there in person.
When my dad died (he retired thru illness at age 58 and died 2 months later) the NHS pensions people wrote to 'him' asking for 2 weeks' worth of pension back as he had died during the period between monthly payments!!! I was not best pleased, to put it mildly.

almost the same as my dad @ 57, he was seeing out his sick leave to zero pay on HR advice before being retired on terminal ill health when he died. One of the first letters we got was from the same HR asking for the date he died for 'cessation of salary (half)'. His boss's word was enough to stop paying him but they needed a death certificate before they'd process his pension and company life policy for my mum. Bureaucracy at its best.

Yes - I have just received a phishing attempt via my stepdaughter's email account. Her system has obviously been hacked and is probing everyone on her email list. Must ring her.

(In case any of you are not tuned into such things ... Dodgy subject lines such as this one's "Disti nguished" are a clue. Curt contents like its "you have a new message from me" are a very strong clue. An embedded link saying "display full email content" is a giveaway, and when the link points to a hugely long and complicated URL that makes no sense whatsover to you, that's a clincher!)

I just had a robot phone call. Apparently if I walk away from the unsecured loan of c. £10k that they think I have, they can get me off having to pay 70% of my debt!

What's not to like? Will be off down the bank tomorrow to get the loan set up.

It does make you wonder about the mentality of the people who fall for these things - very, very trusting - or something...

They are actually targeted at such people. The scammers are fully aware that predominately only a certain type of person will respond. The scammers don't want fairly savvy people. It is the less savvy who will fall for it all and who are ripe for plucking.

I have George Page in Aberdeen, with just months to live trying to transfer £3.2 million into my account. See the thread Spinney started.
