From videos and pictures it could look wide enough, but it really isn't.

That's not my point - you have to appear to show some understanding for fellow road users.

Personally, yes I would expect the the traffic not to try to overtake and perhaps mutter under their breath but by keeping to one side at least you are showing some consideration to their position.

Take it off to the police. I've had this sort of maneuver from time to time, so they blatently want to disregard everybody else's safety - fair dos in some ultra selfish world but you have it on camera, they stopped in a stupid place and started mouthing off - off to plod.

Can't say I understand Pete's pov. They don't place double whites in silly places for the sake of it. You can take an ultra primary and be doing 30mph+ and someone will still risk it. The sad thing is when someone takes someone out coming in the other direction and the cyclist has to ring up the ambulance is that nobody will learn and that they'll be ranting and raving all the way to the hospital in the back of an ambulance about the evil cyclist.

With all respect, there just isn't room to overtake safely on a bridge like that. No use expecting the traffic not to try to overtake - you need to make damn sure they can't overtake. If someone's going past you, and a car appears over the brow of the bridge, you're going into the railings and then under the wheels.

Hope the Police treat this with the seriousness it deserves Gaz. You just can't reason with these half wits so hopefully a visit from Plod and a court appearence may change his behaviour. The sooner this muppet's off the road the better. Don't let the useless sack of sh*te get you down.

1. You never, ever overtake where there are double white lines.
2. You never, ever overtake on a blind summit.

These two things alone make it hard to understand why you are trying to excuse this guy's behaviour, even before we get to the aggression and threats.

Outrageous, I'm glad you're ok and hopefuly the police will do something! Can't believe anyone is seriously questioning your riding:huh:

Looking at the vid again I thought you had passed a policeman just off the island but after looking again it was just a guy in a yellow jacket.

The overtake was without doubt dangerous in the extreme. The only thing I'd take from it (I hope this is seen as constructive!) is that you took and held primary from before the roundabout, which could have been frustrating to the tosser who is obviously in a rush to have an accident. I wonder how long he'd already been following you by the time he tooted.

Just call me Chris...
That's shocking

Hopefully the Police will take it as seriously as the threat was to your safety.
Morons like that just should not be allowed out on the roads.

He came from the right of the roundabout. It's still rather narrow before hand and i possibly could have hugged the kerb before but i've had issues taking primary again after that.. and if he overtook me like this as it is, imagine how close he would have passed if i was closer to the gutter.

Good points well made. I don't know the road there, looks like there's plenty of traffic and the guy took your life in his hands when he pulled that manoeuvre. I hope that your local constabulary have been shown the video by now.

Because he got out of his car, it's not just a motoring offence, IMO.

In case you need to remind the police of the law - relevant HC extracts below. Firstly, the road wasn't clear. The second point, your speed, then becomes irrelevant in any case. As others have mentioned, the getting-out-of-the-car bit confirms that this is a person who shouldn't be allowed to drive....

Highway Code rules

165

You MUST NOT overtake

* if you would have to cross or straddle double white lines with a solid line nearest to you (but see Rule 129)
* if you would have to enter an area designed to divide traffic, if it is surrounded by a solid white line
* the nearest vehicle to a pedestrian crossing, especially when it has stopped to let pedestrians cross
* if you would have to enter a lane reserved for buses, trams or cycles during its hours of operation
* after a ‘No Overtaking’ sign and until you pass a sign cancelling the restriction

[Laws RTA 1988 sect 36, TSRGD regs 10, 22, 23 & 24, ZPPPCRGD reg 24]

http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/TravelAndTransport/Highwaycode/DG_070314

129

Double white lines where the line nearest you is solid. This means you MUST NOT cross or straddle it unless it is safe and you need to enter adjoining premises or a side road. You may cross the line if necessary, provided the road is clear, to pass a stationary vehicle, or overtake a pedal cycle, horse or road maintenance vehicle, if they are travelling at 10 mph (16 km/h) or less.
