I have trouble viewing videos from You Tube. My internet connection is 54Mbps but the videos will play for a split second, load, play for a second, load etc. I would have thought I could watch streamed videos without a problem with this connection speed.

I'm I overlooking something?

yeah, I had to come out of retirement for this..
I think you'll find that 54 is your wireless card speed.. not your internet connection via dsl.
It don't speed up your utoob, but i thought now you know it will help.
Not.

Without meaning to be insulting, are you by any chance using an unsecured wireless hub? I was, and when things got really porridgy I did a check and found about a dozen people riding piggyback on my broadband link. Once I'd kicked them off everything sped up nicely.

do a speed test:

http://www.speedtest.net/

It'll show your actual connection speed. It's a good idea to try it off peak (during the day) and peak (evening).

We had a weekend of no internet, or painfully slow, as virgin needed to upgrade the area as there were too many people using the internet.
