If you look at it in purely statistical terms, the song that had had the most success, ever, on TOTP is surely THE best pop song ever.

Trouble is, most of them were never my kind of music anyway, let alone after umpteen weeks at No1, when they became the WORST pop songs ever (IMO of course)
the thread is 'your' best pop song ever:rolleyes:
I prefer the German version, not because I understand it (I don't) but I like the way she says "Cap'n Kirk"
They're just balloons in the German version too.

I keep coming back to this, it's got everything, fabulous guitar intro, smart lyric, hero chic. Love it.

I'm perhaps one of many people that didn't hear this when it was released (1978*) and sank without trace, and then it had a mini-revival around 1992.
It is very nearly a slightly-happier clone of Buzzcocks' "Ever Fallen In Love", which I now realise came out in the same year!

I probably prefer the Only Ones song, but it's hard to shift that initial impression that they ripped off Buzzcocks. Still, a perfect pop-song!

EDIT: *here's the band in 2007. Has time been kind to them??

I used to really like Another Girl Another Planet, until the early 2000s when I was working at a place where, for a while, I had to spend exceptionally long periods of time on hold waiting to talk to the service desk - and that was their hold music.

Since then I just get flashbacks when I hear it.

After Abba, how about a little George Michael

when i had an office job the boss often put the Absolute 80s radio station on. They play all the sh!t and none of the good stuff from the 80s and after a few days of listening to it, i realised that Wham were one of the best of that bad bunch and developed a new found respect for his song writing skills.
