A gentle easy ride to St. Peters church Frocester, it was mostly demolished in the 1950s and the stone reused to rebuild Wycliffe College chapel.

(33 degrees this morning - thank goodness for the Brooks saddle, no padded shorts required - I hate sitting in a nappy full of sweat! )

chapelle St-Barthélemy

Not found much info about this chapelle other than it dates from the 15th/16th century.

About 3km WSW from Pleucadeuc and perched on top of a hill overlooking the Claie valley. The chapelle is enclosed by a stone wall and within the wall is a small cemetery and at least five yew trees, two of which are very large and (I assume) very old.

The presence of the yew trees (which are rare in Brittany) suggests that the site has had a sacred (pre-Christian) significance for many centuries.

It’s the first time that I’ve seen the nominated saint’s name picked out in metal letters on the side of a church/chapelle.

Here in the UK we have the Churches Conservation Trust CCT which is an excellent resource for anyone wanting to visit interesting churches, it is surprising what is about and some churches only accessable via bridleways - go explore!

Todays ride took me passed St Johns in Slimbridge, parts of this church date back to the 13th Century, more recently in 2018 sculptures of WW1 soldiers were placed next to the graves of the 11 fallen soldiers buried there. They were made of wire mesh which gave them a ghostly appearance, people and relatives of the fallen visited from all over the UK and there was gridlock in the village with the number of visitors, I think the sculptures were eventually given to surviving relatives. If you search for 'Ghost soldiers of Slimbridge' you will find lots of images.

Three ‘new’ ones from this afternoon’s potter around the countryside south of Ploërmel:

Église St-Jean de Villenard in the village of St-Jean de Villenard (the village was founded by the Knights Templar in the 12th century – not sure how old the church is)
