Sounds like they were made for Queen Victoria . She was supposed to see them first at The Great Exhibition
but her courtiers realised that when she saw them there would be a statue of Oliver Cromwell that she could see throught them
And as he beheaded a previous monarch apparently they are not fond of him
so they diverted the Queen away from the gate totally

I think they were intended for Sandringham or something but never went there

then they were sold - eventually to Warrington at a cheap price

something like that

they look good anyway!
