The Holdsworth lurking on one of the TfW bike carriages (converted from a class 153 railcar). I was getting the train to Knighton and riding back to near Craven Arms. Surprisingly flat. Might do Knucklas next time.

My 1980s Super Galaxy is an inch too long to use the wheel-holder thingy in those TW bays. We all understand the economic reasons, but it seems really mean to make the bay so cheese-sparingly small. In fact, I’ve yet to find bike storage on a UK train that is a comfortable fit for any bike. Mr Burnham should make guard’s vans mandatory.

Salisbury station has a bike wash point on Platform 3. I think that’s what it is.

There is supposed to be a bookable tandem space on those TfW 153 cycle units. Probably would have a bike in it as a matter of course but worth bearing in mind. As the owner of a LWB recumbent bike I've wondered about those, but not tried to book one in earnest yet.

That’s useful info, thanks. I think I’ll largely chance it though. Today our South Western train had no announced cycle spaces, but in fact had four good ones.

The cupboards are just an exercise in hoping your bike comes out without anything getting broken or damaged. It really is a piss poor design. Probably a back of a fag packet design by someone who has never ridden a bike or knows anything about their differing dimensions and luggage requirements.

They're just repurposed toilets. They are rubbish. Travelling the other way my bike shared a cupboard with a ginormous e-bike. Fortunately no damage.
By the way it was ridiculously difficult to arrange that journey. The bike reservations aren't made available until an unspecified number of days after the tickets go on sale. I got my northbound to Inverness booked OK, but the southbound was impossible. I think someone swiped all the bike reservations immediately they came available, this was despite me checking the website twice a day waiting for the reservations to come on line. LNER told me there were no bikes allowed on the service I wanted, which was simply untrue. I had to rejig my return journey to get the train from Edinburgh instead of Inverness.
