Would also like to point out that if you haven't already done it, next time you give blood and are sitting down with your cuppa , spend 5 minutes filling in the Bone Marrow form. You might never get called up but if you do................

Well of course the family 26x25 come from a long line of blue bloods. But mine is red. And I have no idea what variety. I did try to give blood once but was sent packing. Obviously mine isn't good enough.

Daughter tried once but sent away with advice about anaemia..... I still faint after losing an armful! - even fainted after the prick test! [possibly due to low blood pressure and not drinking enough!]

[Edit: A+ ...forgot!]

My mum always told me I was special, and one day at school during biology, I realised she was correct, as we learnt about blood and we all tested ourselves, and I was AB+. So I've been donating for quite a few years now.

Never had any issues donating, although I've always drunk at least 2 pints of water before hand. Quite pleased they brought in timed appointments though, as a couple of times in the past I've had to make a run for the toilets afterwards due to a full bladder!

Here's something I've never understood. Why is there a separate bone marrow donor register? Suitable donors can be found via the blood donor register, right?

I'm another common as muck O+. I've given blood a number of times but only once in the past few years due to a borderline iron count. Never used to have any problems but only managed it once in my last five visits (and they've upped the iron count required in this time too), so I've given up going now.

Don't think so - bone marrow is not just blood type it's more picky, so I think they need to test you specially.
And of course, doing it without your consent (the testing) and putting you on the register is probably unethical - donating bone marrow is AFAIK more painful than blood.

No separate test required. Its just that it is more of a commitment than giving blood. The process is much more complicated than just going in during your lunch hour as a distraction from your work.

Joined the register myself when I found out that one of the most articulate, intelligent and pleasant teenager that I ever had the pleasure of looking after as a youth leader, got leukaemia. Fortunately his brother was a match, and put aside their differences (had been estranged from each other) in order to help out.

I'm O+ I think, I've got the Blood Donor key tag attached to my bar bag (daft really, as I don't often use the bar bag. But I've got enough on my keyring as it is...)

I went to donate a few times - first time they couldn't find a vein, then I did one fine and then the last time it was a very slow flow, and touch and go as to whether it would complete in time - I regret to say that after that I've lapsed.

Not sure about the separate tests, but after signing the register the next time i gave blood they took some small vials of blood, which i presume they send to some specific place that keeps a database of all willing donors. That said all subsequent contact with bone marrow issues was by the local blood transfusion centre.

A something. It's on my blood donor card but I haven't given blood in a while, it's a massive pain in the arse. I've got low iron so more often than not they'll do the floaty blood test then send me away, then the coupld of times I have managed to give they've had trouble finding a vein, and then I almost faint afterwards and have to stay there for an hour.

I don't think they take blood from yer bum down here so perhaps it is a local thing to you  .
