Not had the tent out yet, been kipping in the van so far. Might be on the cards though, before the Bank holiday. Phone call tomorrow to see if a particular site has availability.

Which site did you use?
We’re looking at Ty Croes for half term….

Awelfryn site as they have two. About 40 minute walk to the beach. Cracking cycling though.

One thing we've noticed over the last couple of years, is electric hookup is getting quite expensive for a night - £5-7 per night. That's a heck of a lot of juice to use, although they probably have to pay commercial rates, but still.

We're using the Anker Solix power bank and solar panel and it's giving us more than enough for 3 days use and not dipping below 50%, even running the cool box off it during the day in April, never mind summer sun hours.

I can appreciate some campers abuse the power use, so the blanket use charge comes in. We go to one site that charges by usage, OK it's £1 a kw, but if staying for a while it's cheaper than the £5 a night - we might use £20 over a week, including electric cooking/heater.

The last two early season camps, we've used a small gas heater in the awning (had the heater years - it's a parabolic unit that sits on a typical 450g gas can). Works really well in an airy awning, and the cost works out at about £2 a night (get 3 nights heat at least). Not used it until this year, but we've had two early season camps where it got quite cold before we 'tucked up' in bed. It's also cheaper to use than the fire pit, and less smelly.

We're now booked into Shell Island for 3 nights before the bank holiday (it's full on Saturday night) and then moving to a basic site in Dyserth for two nights (usually go to this one at least twice a year). No electric, other than the power brick. Tenting - yay ! We had tried to get on a site in Anglesey, but they want a minimum of five nights at a bank holiday.

At least you have all the lovely lanes to cycle around in Dyserth if you're taking a bike, almost five years now since I rode the likes of Prestatyn-Dyserth Way; Hiraddug Rd; lanes to the east of the still unrepaired Llanerch bridge near Tremierchion; or head a bit further south to Denbigh to climb ~7 miles to Llyn Brenig up the "Road To Hell" segment etc.

The move to increase the min stay is a joke, I’m not surprised the length of time has crept up. As for elec, you just have to look at YouTube with people taking air fryers, projectors, elec blankets….that said campsites are taking the P!

Yup, loads of lanes - used to ride them when we had the Static round there. Hardly see a car if you get the right ones.

Certain sites ask for two or three nights at a weekend/bank holiday, which is fine. But five is cheeky. The basic site we go to charges £1 kw, which is probably what the commercial cost is. Someone moaned on their site it had cost them £20 in electric for two nights, so the owner responded that they had used 20kw of energy, so cooker/fan heater etc etc. Some are taking the wee wee. We usually go electric early or late season, but so far this year we haven't bothered. Next trip is 5 days, and I can get the power bank charged back up driving between the two campsites. IT's mainly to keep the cool box running and we manage enough solar energy during the day to run it for 'free'.

Disadvantage of having a van - you can carry loads. MrsF wanted her 'hammock' last year when we were in Bala, but I 'forgot'.

I said did she want to take it, she's just said 'yes' as the forecast is good this weekend. It's a freestanding one with it's own frame. Fortunately it's quick to assemble. More stuff.

Bikes are going anyway, just for pottering round the camp, then I'll get out for real when we get to Dyserth. Meeting friends at Shell Island and the husband has said 'bring your bike' - he's not a 'cyclist' but does tinker with bikes (bit of buying and selling basic ones as a bit of a side line/hobby) and he fancies a ride about the site (it's huge).
