and my diary blocked off for the dates of; Carlton Main Frickley Colliery Band, Tredegar Town Band and Leyland Band at Morley Town Hall says otherwise. I'm not going to the Grimethorpe gig because I'm working my way through bands that I've not seen before.
When you see Leyland, look out for my son (featured in the clip i posted) who is their soprano cornet player.

For the true spirit of banding, a visit to Durham Miners Gala is a must. Each miners association or trade union has a banner. The band play early in the morning in the village and then take a bus into Durham where they march with the banner through the streets playing a mixture of traditional marches and entertaining pieces for the crowd.
Here is my band with the Deaf Hill banner. Watch the first 3 minutes for the very moving miners hymn Gresford. (My youngest is conducting and I am the short lady with light brown hair on the back row of cornets)

I rate the Whit Friday Brass Band Competition above the Miners Gala. Perhaps it's familiarity breeding contempt. I was taken there to see my mining relatives playing in Easington Colliery Band from being a toddler through to my early teens and then recommencing independently in my late teens when beer was the primary attraction.

At the risk of being threatened with having a cornet shoved up my jacksy, see post 13 here: https://www.cyclechat.net/threads/happy-international-bagpipe-day.97492/#post-1764893

And I refer you to post number three

Here's a couple of tunes from bagpipes that are far more melodic than the Scottish variant

Firstly the Uilleann pipes from Ireland - if only I could play mine as well

Ans then a modern take on Northumbrian pipe music by Kathryn Tickell.

I've neglected my Northumbrian and Uilleann pipe playing and they have languished unplayed for the past couple of years.

I have played at Whit Friday many times. Prefer it as a spectator these days though- Dobcross is my favourite place to watch. Cannot beat a really good band playing a traditional march.
