I don't know, so many things have sentimental attachments, but probably the hard disk (cos I doubt we have a proper backup), and photo albums. Really I ought to get all those photos and letters copied and stored somewhere else.

On a quite serious note.

It is quite common in house fires to find both adults & especially toddlers/children in cupboards or baths etc as they think it a good place to hide from fire.

A good tip for anyone interested is to practice doing a 'left hand search' of your house with lights off & blindfolded, even with headphones or ear muffs on as a)in thick acrid smoke you can't see & b) you may be able to hear very little.

Start anywhere in the house you like & simply touch the wall with your left hand reaching out with your right hand & use your feet also to sweep the area you are walking in.

Do this together as a couple if you like & make a bit of a game of it.

One leads the other follows with the lead man/woman describing what they feel & giving instructions.

The 2nd man/woman can extend to the right of the lead & sweep (keeping contact with the lead) as if searching for a child or a doorway etc.

Make the exit your goal.

This will familiarise yourself with your house in a way you previously didn't understand.

Feel is such a very important sense.

Be able to visualise your home by touch & in darkness & you have every chance should the 'very worst' happen.

plan your escape and practice that plan. at least once a month

2007 we arrived back after easter and wifey and 5yr old daughter needed the toilet . after they washed hands the instantaneous boiler stayed on and caught fire. I was unloading the car with wifey and heard the smoke alarm on the upstairs landing as I was walking into the house and saw the flickering upstairs in the bathroom.
and saw my 5yr old running past me out of the door , stop at the kerb check road was clear and cross to other side. something we had practiced as a game over the last year or so.

I was at the gas shut off valve in the meter box outside in seconds - part of the plan- and up the stairs with the extinguisher kept at bottom of stairs while wifey called the brigade out. they arrived in pump and pump ladder to a very burnt corner of the bathroom and no casualties and a little girl with a beaming smile telling them that she followed the plan that daddy taught her.

the crew manager told her that her daddy was a very sensible man and she should listen to him as he knew how to keep her safe. then bollocked me for not getting out and staying putting the fire out

Wow - I never new these things could be so collectable/valuable.

Personally I have 12 guitars inc 2 Bass & only 1 acoustic & approx 6 amps all of which are on house or Storage insurance but I have reluctantly put 2 guitars & 1 amp up for sale to fund my new & frankly berserk compulsion to buy push bikes or bits for push bikes.

Tiz crazy.
You have more guitars than me ! But we are equal on bass as I have a double bass and a semi acoustic Framus .
I had a fire in my workshop once , I went in but anyone trying to help just got tools thrown out the door at them . The fire was started by next door throwing a lit cigarette over the fence according to fire investigation and the person that threw it apologised personally as he is a friend . The rest of the house still deny it and that makes me smile . Maybe one day I will tell them about the apology and the results of the investigation but for now it more fun to listen to the total bullshit they make up whenever the conversation goes that way
