"You could try Halfords"
"We can probably order one in for you" - and then fails to find it in any of the catalogues on the counter.
They are however very helpful for stuck freewheels/pedals/BB shells, even fork crown races - at no cost.
I wish I could spend more money with them but they make it so hard....

Good range of stock, helpful knowledgeable staff, but a bit pricy.

one about 2 miles away... http://lloydscycles.co.uk/ Another about 4 miles away http://www.sheffield-cycles.co.uk/ another 5 miles ish away http://www.cycling2000.co.uk/ Unfortunately none withing 5 miles or more of work and with only haveing 1/2 hour lunch + starting at 7 am not an easy prospect if you need spares during the day. I do not include halfords, they are similar distances away.I would use them if i could not get an item from a LBS but the chances of them not having the STD stuff and halfords having one in stock is remote .( and summat odd with post it keeps taking out paragraphs in preview sorry for the mess )

One (Velocity) literally around the corner which is good for workshop stuff but they specialise in custom builds and such like so I feel a little intimidated going in to ask about entry level (ie. cheap) spd shoes.
Cycleworld is a couple of hundred yards further up the road, again good for bits and bobs but a little on the pricey side.
Otherwise there's Cycle Surgery just out of town which is unfortunately accessible only by a dual carriageway and I don't always feel like taking my life in my hands to get there.

A bit of an embarassment of bike shops in and around Kendal. I try to split my custom, especially for work on bikes, between the two traditional ones in town - Askew (mtb) and Brucie's (road bikes) - with Wheelbase in Staveley (conveniently located near Wilf's cafe) as the fallback for stuff and Evans (chain) in desperation.
