Supertramp.
Being an art student in the mid 70's there was a group who listenend to drivel like:

Dreamer, you know you are a dreamer
Well can you put your hands in your head, oh no!
I said dreamer, you're nothing but a dreamer
Well can you put your hands in your head, oh no!…

I came into music from the blues so bands like Led Zeppelin was my choice of heavy metal.

Rush utter drivel
Again, Rush have been through an evolutionary timeline. They were another of my favourites during the late 70s and 80's before disappearing up their own arses sometime after Signals. 2112, Permanent Waves and Moving Pictures were OK. Even Grace Under Pressure has its moments, but boy did they record some woeful shite along the way. Peart's lyrics are turgid, especially in the latter years, and Geddy's attempts to fit them into music just makes the whole thing sound self-indulgent.

I went the other way, from an avid early 70s rock fan I've got more into blues and folk as I grew up.

Nickelback are a strange beast indeed. Their popularity is totally at odds with their generic, derivative music. They've nailed a niche in the market of being just edgy enough to be seen as cool by teenagers, but safe enough that parents don't think playing their records backwards reveals satanic incantations.

I've been to one of their gigs, and it was a really strange experience. Catchy tunes, decent playing but I felt absolutely no passion coming from the stage, very weird.

I recall hearing Coldplay being described in the media as "The biggest rock band in the world" a few years ago, and thinking they were taking the pi$$.
