Lardyboy,

I can't believe how wide your cycle paths are!

Very special..went around twice in a couple of hours...little pain at times and some crappy bits but overall an outrageously hot ride....bright blue skies...sunny and windy....celeste was fast as **** as usual...defo a sun factor 12 day out there ...slap it on.

My ride this evening involved a ride to a lbs at the far side of town, it was shut and the next one. I had walked to the closest one at lunch time they didn't have what I wanted. I ended up going to another one after work fortunately they were open and had what I wanted, a light summer base layer. I was quite pleased with my self I managed to resist the temptation to spend more

15 to 20 mile extended commute on the hybrid this afternoon, glorious sun, a bit blowy on the outward leg, along the river Nene, onward to Whittlesea along the edges of the Nene Washes. Hardly a sole to be seen, wide empty tarmac cyclepaths..perfect.

Nothing out of the ordinary on the way home until we got to the Oval, where, if all goes well, we slide two lanes to the right from the bus lane to the lane for Stockwell. Unfortunately the stream of boy cyclists and cars overtaking us was so continuous that I shook my head and the Babe and I went home via Brixton Road, which is not really longer, but a tad more 'real'. As the dog fight and the armed police cordoning off a murder site (might have been a big crack bust, but no helicopter...) demonstrated. However, it's been a while, and the speed at which she ascended the rise to Streatham was such an improvement on her last effort that good humour was restored. And, as for the murder site - one week last year I passed three. So, hey, life goes on.....

Hadn't planned to ride today but the weather was glorious (again) and I fancied getting some miles in. Started on a usual path out across some hilly bits before venturing out into the flatlands that comprised some of stage 5 in the TdF last year (Cav's first win). It was one of those days when I felt I could have just ridden all day and all night, a truly blissful experience when stars have aligned or some such. It also gave rise to one of my more wacky experiences...

Sitting having a coffee when a lady appears next to me and speaks to me. I didn't catch her first sentence (I have to be fully attentive to understand French and she caught me on the hop). Anyways, she then starts prattling at me and I'm kind of understanding her but I'm doubting myself - she can't be saying what I think she's saying, it's just too bizarre. (By way of explanation, I rely one helluva lot on context when being spoken to in French; I understand an amount but need context to resolve the gaps) This lady was talking to me out of the blue, for no real reason and what I could understand didn't make any sense. It added up to one thing; nutter. But I couldn't ignore her, so I said (in my best 'Allo Allo' French) 'sorry I don't understand'.....

...and b*gger me if I haven't met Chateauroux's only bilingual nutter! 'Ah English' she says. 'You have a choice. Which is better, blue or yellow stars?' Well, the answer is obvious isn't it? 'Yellow' I say. She beams like a child on Christmas day. 'Good. I think so too' she says, and swishes off! I blink in disbelief, gaze into my coffee and shake my head... wtf...

On the plus side, I did understand what she was asking me at first in French!

Fantastic.

First time I've managed to get out for ages where I haven't had a time limit (you know the thing; family, work commitments etc.).

Sore, tired, and aching, but feeling like I've earned it.

I might even go out on Friday for another two miler!

Knocked out a 25 miler XC with a friend who's training for a triathlon. Don't think she liked the hilly bits at the time, but was smiling at the end, so all's good. Even managed a short diversion to get a 2-4-5 mince deal to make the muther of all spag bols we've just murdered.

Swallowed about 41 flies on the way round though, including a couple of "back of the throat buzzers" - not so good.

Serviced 4 of my steeds before hand too, including 6 tyre changes, so good day bike-wise.

When I commuted between Bromley and the Lambeth Palace area in the mid 1990's I went via backstreets past the Vauxhall Garden Estate, Oval, Kennington, down to Camberwell Green and up Denmark Hill, across to Lordship Lane, etc. I used to hate the stretch around the Oval, Kennington, down Camberwell New Road to Camberwell Green. I think some one was shot every day there. The club next to the bus garage was a notorious haunt for gangsters. It was frightening. So easy to be in the wrong place at the wrong time and dead .
